Looking for a Great Deal On Your Next Vehicle? Volunteers give 530 boxes of food in OC By Janice Barniak It took only one hour and seven minutes for volunteers to unload and give away 530 boxes of fresh food, no ques- tions asked, at the Oakland City-Columbia Township Li- brary June 27. Since March 17, Feed Evansville has given 18,000 food boxes to people feeling the pinch of shutdown jobs, according to organizer Lisa Vaughn. Vaughn has studied food insecurity and said the Evansville region is sixth in Indiana for food insecu- rity. Those in rural areas can have even more access issues than those in bigger areas. According to Vaughn, food insecurity involves multiple issues, including whether a person has access, availabil- ity and usability of food in their area. On the access side, some are struggling with trans- portation to a grocery store when they have no public transportation and the store is far away. They struggle with availability of the cheap- er food items they often re- ly on during the coronavirus shutdown, and then the us- ability of food they do have. Usability can mean wheth- er they have electricity/re- frigeration, or, if living in a motel, a way to cook the food and having access to a can opener. They may al- so struggle with usability is- sues as far as being able to eat the food they're given in assistance boxes or through charities, (for example, be- cause of allergies, diabetes and health issues.) According to library direc- tor Julie Elmore, they were overwhelmed by the re- sponse, with the fire depart- ment needing to direct traf- fic and a backup of cars for a few blocks. "We only took a week to plan and get the word out," she said. Oakland City-Columbus Township Library host- ed a food giveaway from Feed Evansville last week. Volunteer Melissa Weales waves to a fellow volunteer to get food boxes to load at a food giveaway in Oak- land City last week. The non-profit gave more than 500 boxes of dairy and vegetable items away in an hour as part of a farm-to-table initiative. Vehicle flips, hits tree in Francisco on June 23 Clayton Grider, 19, of Fran- cisco, told police the struts were bad on his '02 Solara caus- ing a June 23 crash on County Road 650 E. According to the accident re- port, after his vehicle flipped and hit a tree, it also had front end damage, and Grider suf- fered what the report called minor bleeding. Witness Jessi- ca Reed, of Francisco, was fol- lowing the vehicle before the crash. Grider said he hit a bump and the vehicle began to bounce, then he overcorrected, hit a ditch, flipped and hit the tree. New flags at Winslow post office Norm Garrett, of Indianapolis, replaces the old flags at the Winslow post office with new ones, and adds new ropes on Thursday morning. Community Baby Shower provides for new moms By Janice Barniak Crossroads Baptist Church of Oakland City had, in just the first hour, 31 people sign up for their Community Baby Shower June 27. According to organizer Jeanne Lee, the shower gave each mom one big item of their choice—a Pack and Play, swing, crib or other item— then a hat, two bibs, a receiv- ing blanket and bigger blan- ket, a toy, a pack of diapers, six outfits, a pair of shoes and a pair of socks for her child. "We're pretty excited it's gone so well. It's our first year for it," she said. The idea was inspired by a similar event in a Somerville church, and all items were donated. "I think God just planted the idea in my head," Lee said. It was originally scheduled May 2, but was delayed until Saturday because of corona- virus. "We didn't know for sure what kind of need there was, but looking at how many peo- ple are here, I'd say there's a lot of need." With the outfits, there were enough left that at 7 a.m. Fri- day, July 3, the church will open until 6 p.m. for a dona- tion-only baby clothes sale of all the clothes that are left. The proceeds will help fund next year's Community Baby Shower. Volunteer Jeanne Lee, from Crossroads Baptist Church, restocked baby outfits at the church's Com- munity Baby Shower Saturday.
