Equipment Company Hwy 161, Holland • 812-536-3486 www.BLESCHBROS.com Washington man arrested for OVWI and fleeing By Andy Heuring A Washington man was arrested for drunken driv- ing and fleeing after he turned his lights off, passed a car, then quickly exited Highway 61 onto I-69. Jau Guadalupe Guerre- ro-Madrigal, 23, of 10 Syca- more St., Washington, was arrested by Petersburg Pa- trolman Bryce Manning ear- ly Sunday morning. Patrolman Manning said he was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Main and Ninth Sts. in Petersburg at 12:45 a.m. with his win- dow down. He said he saw a Black SUV go through the intersection and continue south at a high rate of speed. Manning pursued the vehi- cle and saw it tailgating a ve- hicle in front of it, near the Prides Creek Golf Course. As Manning followed the ve- hicle south, he said near CR 400 N., he saw it in the left hand lane and all its lights were off. Manning said it passed the other vehicle and swerved back into the south- bound lane, and immediate- ly exited onto I-69. Manning turned on his lights and eventually stopped the vehicle. Guer- rero-Madrigal was driving. Patrolman Manning said while talking with Guerre- ro-Madrigal, he could smell the odor of alcohol. He said when he asked Guerrero- Madrigal why he turned his lights off to pass the other vehicle, he responded, "He was just being stupid about it." In his report, Manning stated Sheriff's Sgt. Buck Seger found two beers un- der the drivers seat. Guer- rero-Madrigal failed field so- briety tests and tested 0.16 percent, which is twice the legal limit for blood alcohol content in Indiana. State Trooper Braydon Angermeier told Patrolman Manning that while talk- ing with the driver, Guerre- ro-Madrigal admitted turn- ing off his lights to get away from Patrolman Manning. Guerrero-Madrigal was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while in- toxicated, resisting law en- forcement, a level 6 felony, and reckless driving. 2020 FAIR Continued from page 1 tures to take and submit for their entries. She said they will be judged on the quality of the project, but not the quality of the pictures of their proj- ects. They will have outside judges for the projects. But instead of judging them in person, it will be done on- line from the pictures sub- mitted. "They will still get rib- bons," said Willis. She said all 4-Hers should either have or be getting a packet with instructions on how to register projects this year. "We just sent out the packets to everyone who signed up for 4-H," said Wil- lis. Anyone with questions about the process or proj- ects can call the Extension Office at 812-354-6838. 2019 Miss Pike County Abby Sutt will keep her crown until the summer of 2021. All the fair-relat- ed pageants have been cancelled for this year, due to precautions taken for the prevention of COVID-19. No live events will take place at the fairgrounds this year, and the Indiana State Fair pageant has al- so been cancelled. ELECTION Continued from page 1 was only about half the pre- cincts in the county. Democrat Chairman Twy- la Flint said, "It seemed like we had a good turnout." She said she talked with a couple of people who vot- ed in Otwell and Winslow. "They said they had a good experience and appreciat- ed there was sanitizer avail- able." She said some people were concerned they had to drive farther to get to the three voting centers. But others said it worked out for them because they were able to stop on their way home from work and vote. Griffith said she hopes in the general election to be able to set up satellite vote centers in Stendal, Spur- geon and Union for at least one day prior to the elec- tion to give people a chance to vote closer to where they live. But this Spring, be- cause of COVID-19, they weren't able to do that. The ballot for the general election will look like this: President Donald Trump (R) Joe Biden (D) Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb (R) Woodrow Myers (D) US Eighth District Larry Bucshon (R) Thomasina Marsili (D) Indiana State Rep. Dist 63 Shane Lindauer (R) Teresa Kendall (D) State Rep. Dist. 64 Matt Hostettler (R) Ian Gamroth (D) State Rep. 75 Cindy Ledbetter (R) John Hurley (D) PIKE COUNTY Clerk Lana Griffith (R) Treasurer Susan ( Wheeler) Brittain (R) Jody Hoover (D) Coroner Ray Brooks (R) Nick Harris Henson (D) Surveyor Rich Williams (R) Commissioner Dist. 1 Jeff Nelson (R) Commissioners Dist. 3 Ryan Coleman (R) County Council At-large (vote for 3) Dennis Bishop (R) Greg Willis (R) Todd Meadors (D) way 57. OnStar was trying to disable the car. Mills said he turned on his lights and sirens near the county line and car then sped up to 100 mph and turned off of Highway 57 on- to CR50N in Gibson Coun- ty and drove west in the Pa- toka River bottoms. Coun- ty Road 50N is near a coal mine entrance. Mills said it appeared OnStar was dis- abling the car and it turned onto a dirt road and when it stopped the driver jumped out of the car and fled on foot. Mills chased him but the man described as about 5'10" 165 lbs. wearing jeans and white shirt ran into the bottoms and jumped a ditch. Mills said he attempted to jump the ditch but it was muddy and he didn't make it over the ditch. The ditch was about six feet across and five feet deep. Mills said the man fleeing didn't clear the ditch but was close to the other side and climbed out. "I landed in the middle and was kind of stuck." Mills added, "I would have caught him if I had made it over the ditch," said Mills. This was taking place during off-and- on downpours from Tropical Storm Cristobal. State Trooper John Da- vis said he was on High- way 64 near Arthur when he heard the radio dispatch about the stolen car driving south on Highway 57. So he went through Oakland City can headed toward that ar- ea. He arrived just after the driver fled on foot. Police from numerous other agencies including Pike County, Gibson Coun- ty, DNR and Oakland City set up a perimeter. A K-9 was brought in but they still didn't find the man. "There was a strong rain and it was a muddy mess. He somehow got out of our pe- rimeter," said Mills. Officers in the area searched for about two hours. Mills said he was contact- ed by a detective with the Vincennes Police Depart- ment. He requested Mills seal up the car and keep it impounded until Vincennes could get a tech crew to go through it. As Mills was driving home just before 5 p.m. po- lice got a call from a resi- dent in that area. He said a man came out of a lake. He called police but he stole the man's pickup truck, a green 1998 Chevrolet with dam- age to the tailgate or miss- ing tailgate, and fled again. The truck has a license plate of TK207LGQ. Mills, who was on his way back to Petersburg, immedi- ately joined in the hunt, but police again were unable to locate the man. However this time he was described as wearing only red under- wear and one white sock. As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were still searching.
