Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 received one postcard this week. Twister the Movie Muse- um is located in Wakita, Ok- la., and was established in 1995, immediately follow- ing the filming of the block- buster hit that starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. The pictures on the front of the postcard show the white two-story house with a half-round front porch; the tornado and the cow fly- ing through the air; a pic- ture with the farm scene of a cow and barn; a Twister pinball machine; the wa- ter tower with Wakita written on it; a "Welcome to Wakita, est. 1893, Population 400" sign; and I Dorothy, the ma- chine that read the tornado in ac- tion with a picture of Doro- thy on the machine. This is also the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Postcard. The letter reads, "Sweets! We finally got the chance to visit the Twister Museum in Wakita, Okla. There was a lot of history there about the movie. Pictures from the set up and the movie. They even had the original Doro- thy I they used in the mov- ie. The lady that runs the museum was very friendly. I called to set up a time to come visit and she told us a lot of stuff that wasn't on the movie. She also showed us a behind-the-scenes mov- ie. Bill Paxton even donat- ed a pinball machine to the museum for people to play as they visited. It was also Twister themed. We want- ed to visit the Twister Cafe across the street, but it was early and they weren't open yet. We visited Aunt Meg's house that was in the movie. The house itself was gone and they made the prop- erty into a small park with flowers and a bench. The town itself is real small. Not much there, a school, a small cafe and a feed mill. Overall, it was a nice place to visit if you like the movie. On the way there, we spend the night in Joplin, Mo. We set out to look for a park that was remade after it was de- stroyed by the EF-5 twist- er that leveled half of Joplin in 2012. You could just tell from the are that the twister was huge! It was an open ar- ea of new houses and busi- nesses. The size of it would no doubt have destroyed all of Petersburg complete- ly. The park was beautiful. Dedicated to all the peo- ple that lost their lives that night. Jason and Christina Potts." Thanks for the Twister postcard # 670 and all the history that you both expe- rienced in Wakita and Jop- lin. I never knew there was a Twister Museum and it sounds like a place to vis- it one day. I loved the mov- ie and will see it again if it comes on T V. Also, did you all know that the Peters- burg tornado was 30 years ago now? Time really flies! Winslow Riverside Park looks great for some stars to enjoy and our town workers keep it mowed to give out town that inviting quality. The Patoka River is quite low since we haven't had any rain since last week, and since I have started writing this past Thursday, they are calling for rain all day Thursday, June 4. The temps last weekend were pleasant during the days in the 70s and the nights were a bit chilly in the 50s. This chill didn't last long be- cause by Monday, June 1, the temps were in the low 80s, with 60s at night. The rest of the week was close to 90 and humidity was back. That means the air condi- tioner was turned on and the windows closed. I love the fresh air, but will use the air conditioner. We took all the house plants outside under the shade tree in the rock garden and I know they are really happy to get more fresh air and filtered sunshine. Now, to fill the hummingbird feeders and get them hung in the tree. The rose bushes are in red blooms and pretty soon, the pink tea rose will blos- som, the black-eyed Susans are standing tall as they grow, the day lilies have stems of buds and my red, white and blue flowers have bud stems also. The peonies are still in red and white blooms. The Rose of Shar- ons are leafing out and the walnut tree is in full bloom with its leaves. Lots of branches have fallen from the trees because of the strong winds we have had. But some of those branch- es were in these trees for several years, just hang- ing there. I'm glad to see them fall and not on me. The mowers around this part of town are sometimes heard at least three days out of a week. The end of May I heard the fireworks go off in our area for a few minutes. I guess they needed to spark up the area. My mom, Mildred, is here for a visit and wouldn't you know it, the weather has changed to the humid side as of now, but she may be able to take the heat. Norm took her out for a ride to Twin Pits and Hwy 57 to Petersburg and 61, back to Winslow to Riverside Park and back home, so she could see more of the Pike County area again. We also get to have Terri Ann here with Mom and we all got to enjoy each other's compa- ny. We got to see Laura for about a minute and then she had to leave again, but hope to see her more when she isn't working or sleeping. Since everybody has had to stay at home, un- less it was necessary to get out, Winslow has been like a ghost town with the tumbleweeds passing by. But since some jobs have opened up, there are fami- lies out in their yards and some of our citizens are not out with the public yet. I have seen them out in the yards or on their porches. Soon, we can all hug each other and have those fami- ly reunions again. The Winslow Lions held their first meeting again since March 5, but we held Pi Day on March 14, which was our last gathering of the Lions. Our meeting was a meal meeting of real- ly delicious and tasty food, and we also had birthday cake and ice cream to cele- brate Linda's birthday. She got some great greeting cards and some pretties for the yard, solar lights. Our meeting wasn't in our reg- ular kitchen room, but ta- bles and chairs were set up for distancing and those who could wear the masks, wore them. We had a great time together and we were glad to see all our Lions again, even if we had to dis- tance. Lowell and Keith were there from the Peters- burg Lions. Winslow Lions are planning to serve break- fast at the upcoming Clog the Patoka on July 11 if the COVID-19 guidelines con- tinue to be met and the dis- tancing is in place for every- one to have a great time. For now, the Winslow Commu- nity Festival and Light-Up Winslow Parade will still go on as planned on September 19, but with some changes. These days you cannot plan the events you have always done in past years, but if we all stay safe as we can, we will all enjoy the events to come in our area. Our new truck needed a new muffler and tail pipe, so we checked around and took it to an auto repair shop on North 57, Peters- burg, where as we waiting, he has lots of signs, bottles and other items to enjoy and read. He was into showing his cars but has slowed down a bit from the travels. They were nice men to talk to and friendly Pike Coun- ty stars. Last Thursday, the rain fi- nally came to Winslow and when we stood outside the Community Center, we all saw the beautiful rainbow and a light second rainbow that could be seen over the treetops. They lasted for a long time and then we saw a beautiful sunset of red and yellow. Then when we woke up Friday morning, we all had dense fog for most of the morning and the humid- ity came back by the after- noon. As of right now, I can't think of anything more to say, but yes, as you travel through some of Winslow's streets, watch out for new stop signs that were just put up and soon to be a one- way sign. Then, as you are in our friendly, small town, check out the beautiful yards with flowers and oth- er pretties to make a smile come on your face. Okay, now it's time to stop talking, but keep an eye on fami- ly and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your area. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to every- one you see this week and stay safe. Have a wonderful Flag Day. PUBLIC AUCTION 2667 E. CR. 400 S., Winslow, IN Questions?
