Water truck blocks SR 61 and SR 57 north A semi tractor pulling a water tank broke down at Main St. and SR 61, just past W&V, on Tuesday morning in Petersburg, blocking traffic heading toward Vincennes and Washington. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Baumgart said the truck engine blew up and was going to be towed for repair. The break- down occurred at a time when traffic was being diverted at Goodlet and Maple streets on Ninth Street. All northbound traffic on SR 61 turned either east or west to go around gas pipe work being done for Vectren by Miller Pipe. James Capozella photo Hoosier National Forest temporarily shutting down Hemlock Cliffs Trail In alignment with cur- rent federal, state and local guidance for social distanc- ing and to ensure the health and safety of its employees, visitors and volunteers, the Hoosier National Forest will temporarily shut down the Hemlock Cliffs Trail in Crawford County, Indiana effective April 17, 2020. De- tails and a map of the af- fected area can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/ alerts/hoosier/alerts-no- tices. The Forest previously closed all developed recre- ation sites and mandated a group-size limitation of 10 people or less per group across the entire forest ef- fective April 9, 2020. Other recreation oppor- tunities, such as fishing, dispersed camping, hik- ing, backpacking and back- country camping on the Hoosier National Forest re- main available to the public. To protect public health and safety, all visitors to the For- est are encouraged to: • Avoid visiting the forest if you are sick and/or expe- riencing COVID-19 symp- toms. • Follow CDC guidance on personal hygiene and so- cial distancing before and during your visit to the for- est. • Take your trash with you when you leave. Trash overflowing the receptacles becomes litter and can be harmful to wildlife and at- tract predators. • Make arrangements to use the restroom before or after your visit to the for- est. Unmanaged waste cre- ates a health hazard for our employees and for other vis- itors. • If an area is crowded, search for a less occupied lo- cation. Also consider avoid- ing the forest during high- use periods. • If taking part in dis- persed camping, should you choose to have a camp- fire, exercise absolute cau- tion, keep the fire small, nev- er leave it unattended, and drown the fire when done. Visit https://smokeybear. com/en/prevention-how- tos/campfire-safety to learn more about campfire safety. • Visitors cannot camp in the same dispersed or back- country campsite on the For- est for more than 14 days in a 30 -day period or more than 30 days total in a year. The USDA Forest Service continues to assess and tem- porarily suspend access to recreation areas that at- tract large crowds and can- not meet social distancing guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are urging all National Forest visitors to follow the guidance of the CDC and the Governor's "stay at home" executive order. Though en- forceable by fine or impris- onment, we are appealing to the better nature of the For- est users to voluntarily com- ply with these temporary re- strictions to assist the nation in containing this virus and limiting its spread. Hoosier National Forest employees continue to work during this event, but regular services must be limited, or provided in a different manner, in or- der to protect the health and safety of the employees and of the public who makes use of these public lands. Visitors to national forests are urged to take the precau- tions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). UE launches essay competition for high school students The University of Evans- ville Department of Phi- losophy and Religion has launched the inaugural Tri- State Truth, Meaning, and Value Essay Competition in an effort to encourage re- gional high school students to think about the challeng- es facing humanity today and in the future. "We want to encourage young adults to think clear- ly and to think big," said To- ny Beavers, UE professor of philosophy. The department plans to sponsor the essay compe- tition annually, establish- ing a new concept each year for students to devel- op their essays around. This year, the department is asking students to an- swer the question, "What lessons should humanity learn from the 2020 coro- navirus pandemic? " Each essay will be judged by a panel of UE fac- ulty members. Top three winners will be awarded a cash prize of up to $500, and two honorable men- tions will also be awarded. Essays should be around 1500 words in length, and they will be judged based on academic merit, creativ- ity, and expression of prac- tical wisdom. Proper use of grammar and form will al- so be considered. More information about the competition as well as complete rules and a sub- mission form can be found at www.evansville.edu/ TMVessay.
