Man arrested for OVWI after riding four-wheeler in town By Andy Heuring A Petersburg man was ar- rested after he rode a four- wheeler past a Petersburg policeman who was walk- ing to his patrol car. Bernard Church, 52, of 1001 N. Vincennes Ave., Pe- tersburg, was arrested on a charge of operating a vehi- cle while intoxicated. Officer Scott Arnold said he was walking to his patrol vehicle on Thursday evening at about 6:15 p.m., when he saw Church on a four-wheel- er at the intersection of Sev- enth and Cherry Sts. Officer Arnold said he ap- proached Church and asked him if he knew it was ille- gal to drive a four-wheeler on city streets. According to Arnold's report, Church said he knew that, but was on his way to the Dollar Gen- eral Store. While talking to Church, Arnold said he no- ticed a strong odor of an al- coholic beverage. Church failed field sobri- ety tests and said, "I refuse. Take me to jail, you are go- ing to anyway," when he was asked if he would take a blood alcohol test. He was taken into custo- dy. INDOT beginning seal coat operations May 4 The Indiana Department of Transportation announc- es seal coat operations be- ginning district wide at the beginning of May. None of the projects are scheduled for Pike County, however, they will be in surrounding counties. Depending upon weather conditions, INDOT crews will begin seal coat opera- tions on State Road 358 and SR 58 in Knox and Daviess Counties beginning on or around Monday, May 4. Multiple locations are scheduled for seal coat op- erations, with work sched- uled to last 6 -8 weeks dis- trict wide. Typically seal coat operations in one loca- tion will last for about four days depending upon weath- er conditions and will be do- ne under partial road clo- sures to prevent damage to both vehicles and the road- way. This also increases the quality of the finished sur- face. A fter seal coat is com- plete, any loose aggregate will be swept away from the road. A fter a curing period, workers will come back and fog seal the new driving sur- face. INDOT claims seal coat- ing, on average, extends the life of pavement by three to five years. For every $1 spent on seal coat, taxpay- ers save $ 6 -14 in future road rehabilitation and construc- tion costs. Motorists should remember to slow down, in- crease following distance, obey all work zone signs and flaggers, and plan for extra time to get to your destina- tion. The schedule for seal coating is as follows (all dates are weather depen- dent): Monday, May 4 (two loca- tions), SR 58, from SR 358 to U.S. 231 (Town of Odon excluded), and SR 358, from SR 57 to SR 58. Monday, May 11 (two lo- cations), SR 158, from Crane Naval Base Gate to SR 450 in Bedford, and SR 458, from SR 158 to the end of the road. Monday, May 18, (two operations), SR 62, from SR 245 to SR 162, and SR 62, from SR 162 to SR 545. Tuesday May 26, (two op- erations), SR 145, from 164 to Town Limit of Birdseye, and SR 145, from SR 37 to Bristow Town Limit. Monday, June 8 (two lo- cations), SR 550, from SR 67 in Bruceville to U.S. 50 in Wheatland, and SR 241, from U.S. 50 in Wheatland to SR 61 at Monroe City. Monday, June 15, shoul- der seal coat on SR 67, from SR 550 in Bruceville to Bick- nell limit, and U.S. 41, from SR 54 to about 1.6 miles south of SR 48. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews. PAVING Continued from page 1 COURTHOUSE CLOSURE TO FOOT TRAFFIC EXTENDED TO MAY 4 Flint said the commissioners were going to extend the courthouse being closed to foot traffic. He said Gov. Eric Holcomb was extending the statewide stay-at-home order until sometime in May. "I would like to extend this to May 4, which is when we meet next time. We can look at it again," said Flint. "That sounds like a good plan to me," said Commissioner Ryan Coleman. "I move we extend it two weeks," said Commissioner Jeff Nelson. It was approved by a 3-0 vote. Health Nurse Amy Gladish said Pike County still has only one confirmed COVID-19 case and that person is at home self- isolating. TAX PAYMENTS FLOWING IN County Treasurer Marta Query said between $40,000 and $50,000 of property taxes had already been paid by credit card in the first week of property tax bills being received. Query said her office is receiving between 150 to 200 calls a day since the bills went out last week. "What are their main questions? " asked Commissioner Flint. "Main question is 'why did our bills go up? ' I transfer that to Mike (Goodpaster, Assessor). The other question is 'Are you open so I can come in and pay my taxes? '" "No, you can't." "You mean you won't open the door for me? " "No, I won't," said Query. Goodpaster said a lot of the calls are being transferred to his office. He said the tax bills are going up because of the tax rate increase. "Most people's assessed value is going down," said Goodpaster. County Auditor Judy Gumbel said people calling her office want to know why their property taxes have gone down. Gumbel said for those whose bills have decreased, it is due to the way their deductions have been calculated this year. Query urged people to stop calling her office. "If people would just stop calling our office (they could get more work done)," said Query. She said information they are asking about is on the tax bills, but people aren't reading them. The three ways people can pay their tax bills include: mailing them in, paying by credit card over the phone and paying online. • If paying by mail, include your check, money order or cashier's check, along with your tax coupon. Mail them to: Pike County Treasurer, 801 Main St., Petersburg, IN 47567. Query added, "Be sure to enclose your pre-printed tax coupon, otherwise you will be charged a $1 reprint fee. If you would like a receipt, be sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope in with your payment." Query said, "Those who pay in cash, you will either need to purchase a money order or wait until the Courthouse is opened to the public. There is no certainty that we will open again by July 10, 2020, so please, take that into consideration." • If paying by credit card over the phone, call 877- 690 -3729 and the JCODE you will need is 2485. An incorrect number for this was provided in last week's issue. "We no longer accept credit card payments over the phone in our office. Service fee for MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover is 2.5 percent of the payment amount, with a minimum service fee of $1.95. Be sure to have your parcel number(s) available." • Online payments: For online payments, parcel numbers are required for this service. Go to www. enoticesonline.com/index. php/pike. Sunny not just for human beings Apparently turtles like to sun themselves, too. This turtle was one of many lying on a log in the sun on Saturday. While temperatures were still cool, the sun was bright and the turtle was taking advantage of it in a pit in the Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife area on Sugar Ridge Road.
