C-2 Church Wednesday, August 21, 2019 The Press-Dispatch Continued from page 1 Baptist Continued on page 3 Continued in next column Continued in next column "I realized I hadn't expe- rienced much love, joy, and exuberance in years. She brought with her zest for life and a playfulness that ignited a spark in me that I'd let fizzle without realiz- ing it"— Sage Lewis. This week, PAWS is fea- turing a playful young pup named Jacy, who is a hap- py go lucky gal who doesn't know a stranger. She and her brother, Ted, are the last of their litter and they are both anxiously await- ing for their forever family to take them home. Jacy is three months old, with short, smooth black and white fur. She is a terrier mix and will like- ly be a medium-sized dog. To adopt Jacy, call 812-354- 9894. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the JACY That is one of the reasons Je- sus could say with such ap- peal, "Come to Me" (Mat- thew 11:28), all you who la- bor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Mat- thew 11:28). When we are exhausted and hurting, we can take comfort from the fact that Jesus knows. But the greatest work Je- sus did was not in the carpen- ter's shop, nor at the marry- ing feast in Cana, where He turned the water into wine. The greatest work Jesus did was not when He made the blind to see, the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak, nor even the dead to rise. What was His greatest work? His greatest work was what He accomplished through the Cross and Res- urrection. There the burden of our sins was placed on Him and there He won our salvation. And that is why we can come by faith to Him and He will give us rest, having a full Fellowship at the church. Everyone is welcome. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Jerry "Tuffy" Blackwell, Pastor Sharon Kendall, Reporter CROSSROADS BAPTIST CHURCH 2789 S. State Rd 57 Oakland City Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; Wednesday, Bible study 6 p.m., studying in Philippi- ans; Wednesday, children's activities include a meal, games, lessons and more. All times are CDT. Last Wednesday evening, we started our new study in Philippians. If you missed the first week, no worries. We only covered verses 1- 11 in the first chapter, so there is a lot more to cover and it's not too late to join our weekly study. The chil- dren will begin a new study this week. Last Wednesday, the chil- dren finished their summer series of Jonah (titled Over- board) with special games and prizes. While the chil- dren start a new study that will be fun and exciting, it is exciting to let you know about a new weekly Wednes- day event that will soon be coming: "R/C" cars. This ministry is just now being formed, but it promises to be an exciting time for chil- dren of all ages. More in- formation will be coming soon. Another event to look forward to is our fall dona- tion charity sale on Satur- day, September 28. Crossroads loves our com- munities in both Gibson and Pike counties. Without go- ing into too much detail, at the climax of the movie the main character, Coach Tay- lor looked at a crowded lock- er room of tired high school football players and asked the question "what is impos- sible with God? " The idea was to hear their answer, nothing. Which is true, we believe that with God every- thing is possible (Matthew 19:26). This week while preaching VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E. WINSLOW CHRISTIAN CHURCH Corner of Lafayette and Walnut Pastor 812-753-3539 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; We extend a warm wel- come to everyone. Dr. Robert Asa, Minister over the latter half of John 17, the words of Jesus, or should I say the prayer of Jesus to the Father right before he is arrested the night before his execution, struck me. Jesus' prayer was very purposeful, and Jesus specifically prayed that the Father would make and keep his followers one. Jesus knew that what the apostles would face in his ab- sence would be enough to di- vide them or give the enemy a chance to break them away from each other. But Jesus al- so knew that if his followers were united, that nothing would be impossible, in the kingdom of God, with his fol- lowers unified, the kingdom of God would persevere. Everyone welcome. DJ Bryant, Pastor "Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man." "The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man."' "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:21-24). Because He lives. I Chronicles 12:32 tells us that men from the family of Issachar joined David's ar- my because they understood the times to know what Is- rael ought to do. These men had something called dis- cernment. They knew what ought to be done and did it. Only by studying God's word with the enlighten- ment of the Holy Spirit can we discern what we ought to be doing, as well as how and when we should be doing it. But we can't stop there. Application and obedience are required. Our war is not with people, but with the sin in our lives like weeds. The root that causes the sin must be dug up and removed, by a love for Christ that is deeper than the love of all else. Sarcasm and cynicism ruled my life. Maybe it was a defense mechanism or may- be I used it to divert atten- tion from myself. Regard- less of why I used them, I lived my life by them. A f- ter I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, I continued to use those long trusted de- vices to push people away and guard myself from be- ing vulnerable. Recently, God crumbled a wall in me that I didn't even know was there. "Choose you this day whom ye will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" ( Josh- ua 24:15). "Choose." God speaks this word to every man amid the thunders of Sinai and the pleadings of Calvary. Chris- tianity is a religion of rea- son, intelligence; not of au- thority and force. It appeals to motives; it sets right and wrong, life and death, be- fore every man's mind and calls upon him to choose be- tween them. The choice is voluntary. No deception is used, and no compulsion of any kind. God never coerced anyone's will, and He never will, even to save him. The choice in all cases is a per- sonal one, in view of motives, "Choose you." Each soul will decide his course and destiny, and will be required to give ac- count of himself at the judg- ment. Every one is at liber- ty to decline God's service, just the same as he is at lib- erty to enter it; but to refuse is to choose. Hence, the en- tire responsibility of choos- ing rests on YOU.
