Poplar Street, Petersburg Pike Central starts season Friday at Brown County By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net It might have not have been pretty, but the Pike Central football team made its fi- nal tune-up before the start of the regular season when they scrimmaged at Clover- dale on Friday, Aug. 16. "They got the most out of it that we could, considering the circumstances," Chargers' head coach Dave Stephens said. "We saw some opportunities for improve- ment in some areas and we saw some oth- er areas where we feel pretty good about where we are at." It appeared that Pike Central was play- ing its cards close to the vest and didn't want to reveal too much of its playbook, strategy or potential adjustments on film, while Cloverdale went deep into its play- book and even ran some trick plays. It's fair to say, Pike Central was focused on improving and using the scrimmage to prepare for Brown County, and Cloverdale was more focused on winning the scrim- mage. "They prepared for us like it was a Fri- day night," Stephens said. "We didn't game play for them. We prepared all of last week for Brown County. Things weren't nearly as bad as they seemed. On a real Friday night, we would have made a 100 differ- ent adjustments, but we didn't want to re- veal those. "If I came and saw that and didn't know any better, I would be raising the alarm flags, warning bells or whatever. I'm not saying that we are a nine-win team, but we are not what we showed on Friday night either." Besides one or two minor issues, the Chargers made it through the scrimmage on Friday unscathed. Backup quarterback Jaggar Dent could miss some time with a shoulder injury he suffered after a long run, but, thankfully, the injury was far less severe than origi- nally thought. By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central girls' golf is off to one of the best starts in recent memory. The Chargers shot a 229 on Thurs- day, Aug. 15 at Prides Creek Golf Course to improve to 6 -0 after picking up a pair of victories over North Knox and South Knox. "It's not our best team score, but our attitude remains positive," Pike Cen- tral head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "It's definitely a solid start to the sea- son for us." Hadley Holder shot the low score for the Chargers with a 46. It was Holder's best nine-round score this season. She was followed by Emma Rainey with a 53, Sydney Loveless with a 60, Madison Warner with a 60 and Sophie Carnahan with a 65. Pike Central hosted Southridge and Heritage Hills at Prides Creek on Tues- day, Aug. 20. The team will travel to Washington for a triangular meet with the Hatchets and Vincennes Lincoln on Thursday, Aug. 22, and to North Knox on Monday, Aug. 26. 2019 Pike Central track awards Pike Central girls' track and field team recently held its banquet for the 2019 season. The Chargers lost their first game against Southridge 5 -2, but bounced back and defeated Evansville Harrison on penalty kicks in the third-place game. Joey Ridao and Xavier Shoultz scored goals against Southridge. Pike Central's varsity head coach Jacob Western said Peyton Howald had a big game in goal, making a lot of really nice saves. In the third-place game, the Chargers and Warriors were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, thanks to another goal from Ridao. Pike Central went on to defeat Harrison 2-1 on penalty kicks made by Ridao and Isaac Burette. Goalkeeper Gabe Jones was impres- sive and made three big saves on the Warriors' penalty kicks. "I was really happy with how the kids responded to losing the first game," Western said. "We played a great team game in the second game. Brycen Knepp and Isaac Fair played particular- ly well, they both gave great effort all day and found a lot of really nice passes."
