Quilting is an old-fash- ioned, long-respected handi- craft that has stood the test of time. Many women learned this intricate craft from their family members, neighbors, and friends. Homemade quilts are treasures, thanks to the sharing of the skill through the years. Here at the Neal Center, quilting has been a popular activ- ity for years that you may have always wanted to learn. On the other hand, you may be an experienced quilter, looking to enhance your skill level. The Neal Center is offering two classes in quilting, beginning on Tuesday, August 20 through November 12. If you are new to quilting or have very limited quilting abilities, a class in "Beginning Quilting" class will meet Tuesdays from 1PM-4PM, at the Neal Center. For those expe- rienced quilters that would like to learn advanced techniques, a class in "Advanced Quilting" will meet each Tuesday from 9AM-12Noon. Brenda Arrowood, local quilting expert, is the instructor for both classes. For further information on registering for these classes, please contact Cleveland Community College's Continuing Education division at 704/669-1405. Quilting Classes begin Aug. 20 In the business world, advertising is the way to publicize a prod- uct or service and often, the key to a company's success. Recognition is important to a company, as this promotes a positive association with a company's product or service. The downside is that all adver- tising, regardless of the method used, comes with a heavy price tag. Are you looking for a fun, creative and affordable way to promote your business? Take part in the Neal Center's "Parade of Tables"! ANY company, business, civic group, etc. can take part in this special event. Your group decorates a table with a creative theme, sells tick- ets to your table and enjoys a good dinner together! It is a great way to publicize your specific group and have fun all at the same time! The event is set for Saturday, September 14, beginning at 5PM at the Neal Center in Shelby. Sponsorship can be for any number of tables desired, each with the theme of your choice. There is no limit to the activities or ideas that can be chosen for a theme, so put your creativity to work! If you, a group, organization or business are interested in partici- pating, an information sheet that reviews the requirements for spon- soring a table is available at the Neal Center Reception Desk. After reviewing the information, if you decide to commit to the event, you will receive a "Parade of Tables" information packet. This contains the required registration information, tickets to sell for your reserva- tions, and additional details to help you have a successful table. Space is limited, so get your packet SOON! For further infor- mation regarding this event, please contact Paulette Putnam, Neal Center Executive Director at 704/481-7380 or Teresia Ladd, Neal Center Administrative Assistant at 704/481-7381. Once the summer activities wind down and the children return to school, many start thinking about the cooler months ahead. With that comes the thought of keeping warm once the cold arrives! Though scarves, mittens, caps and Afghans are read- ily available most anywhere, there is something special about a handmade item. Crocheting is a favorite armchair activity that many enjoy that can create handmade items to keep everyone warm this winter. In addition, these handmade items make wonderful Christmas gifts! The Neal Center is offering a class in "Crocheting for All Levels", beginning on Thursday, September 5. This is for anyone interested in crocheting, no matter what level you are, whether it is beginning, intermediate or advanced. The class will meet Thursdays from 10:00AM-12:00 Noon at the Neal Center and taught by Jane Gibson, local crocheting instructor. Regardless of your experience in crocheting, there is a place for you in this group, providing a chance to meet others that share the interest and learn from each other. The class is free of charge, but you must provide your own crocheting supplies. A list of the required supplies will be available at the front desk of the Neal Senior Center. To reserve a space in the class, please contact the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488.
