Everyone remembers our teachers writ- ing on a blackboard with a stick of it! The somewhat younger generation may think of the large sticks of colored chalk used to make a wall decoration. However, the current generation is learn- ing to use chalk in an entirely different way: as a liquid, much like paint and applying it make a silk-screen design! The Neal Center is hosting a class in "Chalk Couture", which is using liquid chalk to create works of art. Local artist Sarah McLauchlin, expert in the area of liquid chalk art, will teach this class. The class is taught over a four-week peri- od, beginning April 8. The first three classes (April 8, 15, & 22) are introductory classes and the fourth (April 29) is an advanced class, working with a more detailed project. There is a $20 fee for the each of the three introductory classes, which covers the cost of the board to complete the project. The other supplies needed for this technique are provided and you will be able to create two projects in each class. The fourth class has a fee of $30, covering the cost of a larger board for a more advanced project. Each class session will meet from 6PM-7:30PM. This class has a limited num- Chalk Couture class at Neal Senior Center ber of seats, so please contact the Neal Center at 704/482- 3488 to pre-register. If there is sufficient interest, anoth- er class may be offered at a future date. Healthy eating and good nutrition can improve your health and keep you functioning inde- pendently. Yet, only 25% of older adults are eating a well-balanced diet. There are many factors that can affect how we eat. For exam- ple, your sense of taste and smell often change with age, making food less appetizing. Poor nutrition can increase the risk of infections, as well as your blood pressure and choles- terol. Those who are malnour- ished make more visits to doctors, hospitals, and emergency rooms and are hospitalized twice as long as well-nourished people. Often, the symptoms of poor nutrition, such as confusion and disorienta- tion, can be mistaken for signs of dementia. If you would like to improve the choices of the foods you eat, the Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring an eight- week workshop entitled "Steps to Health-Better Choices." This series is designed to instruct indi- viduals on how to improve their health through making better food choices. Session one begins Wednesday, March 13, at the Neal Center. The meeting dates are April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1 and 8. The workshop is free of charge and each class lasts for one hour, from 10:30-11:30AM. To pre- register for the class, please call the Neal Center at 704/482-3488. The workshop is limited to fif- teen participants, so please call in advance to reserve a space. For additional information, please contact Nancy Abasiekong, Extension Agent in Family & Consumer Sciences, at the NC Cooperative Extension Service at 704/482-4365 or Daniel Dedmon at the Neal Center at 704/481- 7387.
