Poplar Street, Petersburg By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central led 2-1 after six in- nings against Loogootee and Brax- ton Rice had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning as they tried to get their first win of the season on Thursday. However, Loogootee got three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 4- 2 over the Chargers. Pike Central went up 2-1 in the sixth inning when Joey Church hit a single past the second baseman. He then took second on a passed ball and scored when Brennon Benton hit a triple. Race Britton's single brought Benton in for a 2-1 lead. Britton stole both second and third base. But couldn't make it home, as Eli Coleman popped out to the sec- ond baseman and Kyle Williams hit a grounder to the shortstop for the third out. Loogootee started the seventh with Max Blackwell getting on with a sin- gle. Pike Central's Troy Rickard field- ed Nathaniel Hart's grounder and threw him out for the first out of the inning. Sebastian Toy walked to put men on first and second. Bryant Eckerle then got a single to score Blackwell to tie the game. "Braxton was pitching a no hitter at that point. They scored their run on a walk, an error and a balk," said Head Coach Joe Cummings of the first six innings. Pike Central got to within one out and one strike of getting out of the in- ning, as Rice struck out Wyatt Crane for the second out. Rice had thrown 100 pitches and had two strikes on Jalen Wildman. But his 101st pitch was ripped for a double and brought home both Toy and Eckerle as Loogootee took a 4- 2 lead. Rice then got a dribbler back to himself for the third out. Eckerle shutdown the Chargers in the bottom of the seventh, getting a grounder to second base from Draven Huff and a strikeout from Connor O'Neal. Rickard reached base with two outs when Loogootee's catcher dropped the third strike. Rice hit the ball out of the infield, but it was caught by the centerfielder. CHARGERS FALL TO WASHINGTON IN OPENER Pike Central got a grand slam homerun from Braxton Rice in the bottom of the third inning to jump back into a game that looked like a blow out. Washington went on to win 9 -4 in the season opener for the Char- gers. Washington put up five runs in the top of the third inning that was high- lighted by a two-run homer by Seth Holtsclaw.
