Kyle Williams followed with another single. Huff struck out for the first out. Connor O'Neal reached first base when he took a pitch be- tween his shoulder blades to load the bases. Rickard was out on a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Rice then crushed a 0 -1 pitch 370 plus feet over the centerfield fence that mea- sures 360 feet. It brought the Chargers to within one run at 5 -4. Pike Central's next big- gest threat was in the sixth inning when Chest- nut reached on a walk and Benton followed with a hit. They advanced to sec- ond and third on a ground ball to first base by Britton for the Chargers' second out. The threat died with a strikeout. They did not get anyone on in the seventh inning and fell 9 -4. "I would rather be 2-0 instead of 0 -2. But against Washington, we faced prob- ably one of the best pitch- ers we will see all year," said Cummings. "I'm tickled they let him pitch five innings. We know we can hit him, so that won't be a problem when we see them in the sectional," said Cummings. He said he was con- cerned after they started the Washington game down 5 -0, the Chargers might get down. "Honestly, that was a concern of mine. They have kept their heads up, even when we got beat in the last inning. It was hard to take. You can tell it was hard to take. Loogootee put a couple runs up on us. But I keep telling them, things are going to turn around," said Cummings. CHARGERS Continued from page 1 Third baseman Braxton Rice put the tag on a sliding Washington runner. The next inning, Rice hit a grand slam homerun to get Pike Central back in- to the game. Charger second baseman Troy Rickard makes a diving catch of a ground ball during a 9-4 loss to Washington. 2 col. x 3" (actual size) Way to go, (grad's name)!
