(USPS 604-340) Mayor Craig ends his term as mayor with one final meeting By Mike Johansen Petersburg Mayor Jon Craig ended nine years as the mayor with one final meeting and a reception after the business was finished, with family, friends and city workers wishing him well. T here was cake and punch served by city staff and friends along with his family for everyone as they mingled for more than an hour after the official business was over. Craig ended nine years as the Mayor of Petersburg on Friday and began his new post as Deputy Director of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs on Monday. In the Water Board meeting, they heard updates on the Vincennes Avenue water line projects and the Solid Waste water line extension project. The water lines on Crestview are being completed and cleaned up. The Board also learned that the Wellhead Protection Plan Phase 2 project has to be updated by the city. It is a process that takes place every few years. Midwestern Engineering was awarded a contract to do the work for the city with costs to be no more than $3,500. The board also gave an adjustment to Dusty Davis Properties for a water meter malfunction. The meter showed that 100,000 gallons of water had been used during cleaning and remodeling of the apartment, but actual use was much lower. An inspection of the meter determined it had malfunctioned. The contract with Midwestern Engineers for de- sign and inspection of additional fire hydrants for their replacement was approved with an additional $8,500 added on with the adjustment of the contract. The Board of Public Works and Safety decided to leave the question of hiring additional part-time help for the street department to the new mayor when the appointment is made. Bernard-Lochmuller Associates was approved as the engineering firm for the Road Bypass Project along Illinois Avenue in Petersburg. The city is also working with the Indiana Department of Transportation to designate the bypass as State Road 56. The bypass is expected to be constructed in the 2014 fiscal year as a way for trucks to bypass downtown Petersburg. It would be a switch of the state road from through downtown to the bypass road from SR 57 to the current SR 56 along the Illinois Avenue corridor. The project has already received approval of the state. The mayor also reported that Duke Energy is working on getting the east side of Main Street lit again. Duke has to fix a connection before the lights will be back on. That fix should happen within a week or so. The disconnection was made in connection to work at the Home Building block. The Board of Public Works and Safety also approved a contract with Alt and Witzig Engineering for compaction and testing at the Silver Dollar Saloon demolition site for $720. That work will be done once the buildings at 601605 East Main are down. That demolition work is being done by Ice Construction and they have until the first part of February to complete demolition work on the three buildings and clean-up of the site. The Board also gave final approval on the contract with Ice. The Board also approved a contract with Region 15 for $38,000 to oversee work on the Storm Water Grant projects. The money comes from the 100 percent grant for the project. Pol ice Chief Chuck Baumgart gave an update on a change in cell phones for the police department in regards to use for internet communications and a network of which they are in need. The use of cell phones for the system could save the city $1,500 to $2,000. It was adopted for accounting purposes because the city did not have any procedures or ordinance in place to cover such expenditures. The expenses are only a very small part of the budget each year. The City Council also adopted a resolution supporting the use of funds from either the EDIT Fund or Rainy Day Fund for use in planning for the Illinois Street bypass project. This would cover the city's portion of that project and gave the state the needed information that the city has committed the needed funding. PEACE of MIND MARVEL CONSTRUCTION final report will be made at an upcoming meeting. T he Petersburg Cit y Council heard a report that two students from Purdue University will be in Petersburg in the near future to do the design work for an entrance from I-69 to the city. The design work is being done at no cost to the city. The City Council passed an ordinance called the Best Interests of Government Ordinance as required by the State Board of Accounts. It covers expenditures for special awards, flowers for special occasions or funerals and many other similar situations.
