The Press-Dispatch C-9 Wednesday, January 30, 2013 From out of the past Files of the Past The Petersburg Press Sixty years ago Tuesday, Dec. 23 - Dec. 26, 1952 Christmas Edition Thousands of Pike County's Christians kneel at their respective altars, with more obeisance to come. Were the lowly Nazarene to have come back to earth and sat in the pew of any church in Pike county at one of it's services Sunday commemorating The Master's birth, he would have recognized a genuineness of purpose and something of earth heavenly and all appropriate as a tribute to both The Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus. Warm praise has been heaped upon Petersburg's volunteer fire department by councilman Tom Marsee for their work in fighting the fire at the Bernard Marsee home a week ago Sunday morning. Councilman Marsee is a brother of Bernard Marsee, in serious condition as the result of the fire which was the direct cause of David Joe Eck, 5, losing his life and also placed his wife, Myrtice, in the hospital with second degree burns. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Gettis Dickinson, a daughter, Laura May, Dec. 13. Deaths: Louis Seipel, injured on the job at Crane Naval ammunition depot, Dec. 21' Marriages: Mr. and Mrs. Darrell McClellen, two weeks ago Sunday. The Pike County Dispatch Fifty-nine years ago Friday, Dec. 18, 1953 Marion Fettinger was seriously injured at the Ditney Hill mine Wednesday. The accident occurred at quitting time as the men were going to the cage to come up out of the mine. Marion was running and ran into a cross bar, stiking his head so hard he was knocked unconscious for 30 minutes. Ed Copple and Vernon Willis, who were with him at the time, helped to bring him out of the mine. He was taken to the Washington hospital where it was disclosed he had a broken vertebra in the neck and possibly a spine injury, as he is unable to move either hand or foot. Winslow has a former high school basketball player who is making a name for himself at Memphis State this year. Friday night, Dick Kinder fired in 44 points against Marshall College to help defeat the West Virginia college team 104 to 85. Kinder graduated from the Winslow high school with the class of 1951. He was a guard on the Winslow team when they went to the semifinals and were defeated by New Albany. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. William Holman, a daughter, Dec. 16; to Mr. and Mrs. Grayson Richardson, a daughter, Jo Ellen, Dec. 11; to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Gladish, a son Larry Eugene, Dec. 12. The Pike County Dispatch Fifty years ago Thursday, Jan. 3, 1963 The Petersburg Jaycees and Ministerial association are commemorating Epiphany 1963 with observance of the appearance of the Magi and the European custom of the firing of the Christmas trees. The trees will be fired in commemoration of the light of "Star of the East" which led the Wise Men to Christ. The service will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 6 on the Orphan's Home lot. In the opinion of the County Agent, Bill C. Robinson, Pike county leaders and residents have only themselves to blame if the projected population drops as predicted in a recent study of the White and Patoka River drainage counties by the U. S. Corp. of Engineers. The study predicts that the county population will be only 7,000 people in the year 2000. It predicted that the upstream counties were going to grow by leaps and bounds. The downstream counties were supposed to just about stabilize, with the exception of Pike County. He stated that people weren't leaving Pike county because there weren't enough places to live as a result of all the mining, but because there wasn't any place that they could make a living. He challenged all of Pike county to find ways to move the county forward with regard to good jobs through industry, farming, mining, forestry, recreation and tourism. At Hayes Red & White Supermarket, all brands of coffee were 29 cents a pound with any purchase over $10; Crisco was 69 cents for a 3 pound can; pork roast was 25 cents a pound; Emge's bacon was 89 cents for a 2 pound package. Dubois County Farm Bu- reau is in discussions to purchase the assets and inventory of the Pike County Farm Bureau. A letter to stock holders stated that "Pike County Co-op has had financial difficulty in the past several years, as have many of us as farmers, securing on-going financing for operations has been increasingly difficult." The Pike County board of directors have approved the sale, the final determination is up to the stockholders. Mayor T. F. O'Rourke presented mayor-elect Jack Kinman with a new gavel as a gesture of goodwill at the last city council meeting in 1987. He extended an offer to help in any way he could when the new regime took office January 1. Police Chief William Walker presented Mayor O'Rourke a watch from all city employees. Inscribed on the back of the watch was "Thank you for 20 years of service." Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Bailey, a son, Walter Alexander, Dec. 7; to Mr. and Mrs. Larry E. They saw service in the Philippine Islands. People are complaining a great deal about prisoners in the county jail being permitted to yell at passers by. Nearly every farmer passing the jail has been yelled at and made to stop by those in the jail. The sheriff should have this stopped and keep the windows down. Mrs. A. F. Leopold, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Sol Frank, for the past two weeks, returned to her home at Chicago Monday. Carl Wyatt and Jackson Risley of this city, are the happy fathers of girl babies, which arrived at their homes the day before Christmas. There was a big time at Winslow Christmas eve. There were a large number of drunks on the streets and a general fusillade of bullets from revolvers. A large plate glass in the bank building and a glass in W. S. Brown's store were broken by the shots. The authorities there are investigating the matter and arrests may follow. The storm of last Friday evening was rather a severe one in this locality. The day until three o'clock had been very pleasant when it began to turn cold and at half-past four a regular blizzard swept over the city. The wind blew a gale and at five it brought rain and then turned into a blinding snow which raged for a half hour. The wind kept up until eight o'clock. A portion of the roof was blown off W. L. Barrett's store building and also a portion of the roof on the Burger block, and also the roof was blown off the boiler room of the Farmers' mill. The residence of James Thomas, near Alford, was also slightly damaged. There were other damages done by the wind in the city and county, but none, however, of a serious nature. Work was progressing nicely at the Carter glass works well until Wednesday when the large drilling stem broke. It was defective and another one was ordered at once. The well is down 210 feet. A new engine and boiler were also ordered and will be shipped at once from Muncie. Talton Morton, a pioneer of Pike county, died on Christmas eve at his home near Winslow, at the age of 81 years and six months. He came to this county from Kentucky when a young man and has seen the county grow from almost a wilderness to a thickly settled and populous county. His funeral was conducted Saturday and internment at Flat Creek cemetery.
