B-4 Wednesday, January 30, 2013 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers come close By Mike Johansen A fast finish could not help the Pike Central Lady Chargers recover from a very slow start against Heritage Hills on Friday and another tough start on Saturday resulted in a close loss to Tecumseh on Saturday as the end of the regular season nears. The regular season ended Tuesday night with a home game against the Boonville Lady Pioneers. The next game will be a week from Friday when the Lady Chargers take on either Mitchell or Heritage Hills in the Semifinals of the Sectional 31 Girls Basketball Tournament at the Cabby O'Neill Gym on Feb. 8. Pike Central plays in the 6 p.m. game that Friday. Heritage Hills and Mitchell meet in the first round on Tuesday in the 6 p.m. game. In the second game Tuesday, Jasper plays Washington at 7:30 p.m. The winner of game two meets Vincennes Lincoln at 7:30 Friday in Jasper. The finals are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Cabby O'Neill Gym. On Thursday, a slow start and tough shooting through the first three quarters, while Heritage Hills hit above the 50 percent mark in shooting, resulted in a 52-39 loss in Pocket Athletic Conference play. "We got off to a poor start on both ends of the floor. In the second half, we did a much better job defensively. We could just never get it going on the offensive end of the floor," said Pike Central Head Coach Randy Graham. Emily Howes sank the first shot for Pike Central from three point land just 18 seconds into the game. However, that was the last points for PC until 2:46 remained in the opening period. In the meantime, Heritage Hills scored 10 points for a 10-3 lead. Jordan Like broke the string with a two point inside shot and a free throw. After four free throws by the Lady Patriots, Like had another three point play. Like countered a Lady Patriot basket with two free throws to keep the game somewhat close at 11-16 for Heritage Hills. The Lady Patriots scored the first two baskets of the second quarter with Howes breaking the run with a three. A two by Alyx Abbott, now back playing after an injury kept her out a few games, had the score at 1622. The Lady Patriots out scored the Lady Chargers 11-1 to end the first half leading 33-17. Heritage Hills hit 11 of 20 field goals in the first half including 5 of 9 the first quarter and 6 of 11 the second. PC made 5 of 22 shots. The third period was much slower and both teams had trouble shooting from the field. PC made only 1 of 13 shots, but added four free throws by Like. Heritage Hills made 4 of 11 and two free throws for a 10-6 edge and a 43-23 lead. The Lady Chargers offense got back in gear in the fourth quarter including making 11 of 15 free throws and two field goals. They had a 16-9 edge, but that was 13 points short of a full comeback. Jordan Pike scored 19 points including 15 of 16 free throw attempts and Alyx Abbott had 8 points. Like had nine rebounds, Olivia Leighty five and Samantha Halbrader four. Abbott had two assists. The Lady Chargers are 4-16 overall and finished 1-7 in the PAC in eighth place ahead of South Spencer. "We had seven turnovers in the first quarter to zero for Tecumseh. Outside of that, we played a really competitive game and the girls worked hard. We were just trying to get a solid thirty two minutes of play and came pretty close," said Coach Graham. The only down quarter was the first one when the Lady Chargers had the seven turnovers and fell behind 19-9. PC came back with a 9-7 edge in the second quarter with a great defensive effort. They still trailed 26-18. The Lady Chargers had the third period by a 13-9 margin as the good defense continued as the scoring picked up a little bit. PC was within four, 35-31. The group strongly believes that every child should be able to participate in the program without having to provide their own equipment. So, everything the child needs is provided. They have eight certified instructors and several volunteer leaders. Each discipline has to have at least one certified instructor. In order to become a discipline instructor, one must attend the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Education, Instruc- tor Workshop. In this workshop, instruction is provided by people with national training in their disciplines. Nearly all the instructors at the workshop are certified by other organizations or agencies, and the instruction provided surpasses the requirements for instructor certification by those organizations and agencies. The groups meetings this year will be at the Pike County Bird Hunters Club, with the exception of the first meeting which will be at the Pike County 4-H Fairgrounds. The first meeting of the year will be a safety meeting required for all participants to attend and an informational meeting for their parents. This meeting will be on February 25th at 6:30 p.m. Anyone who might be interested in joining Pike County 4-H Shooting Sports is encouraged to attend and find out more. For more information on how your child can become a member or to volunteer, please contact via email at pc.shootingspor ts@gmail. com or by phone contact Jamie Jenkins at (812) 5822266 or (812) 789-5189.
