Wednesday, January 30, 2013 C-1 Church notes Opinion Letters to the editor Files OUT of the past Services listed at area churches Rumbletown free methodist church 1485 N. St. Rd. 57 Petersburg "Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. 'Follow me,' Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him. Then Levi had a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, 'Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?' Jesus answered them, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:27b-32, NIV). Jesus still calls us to repentance. Have you answered the call? We invite you to hear His message again in the Rumbletown Church. Next week's question: Christ is the firstborn of the what? Hint—Colossians. February birthday wishes go to Bruce Weathers, Dave Durcholz, Seth Martin, Alexis Boyd, Lisa Bruner and Olivia Bruner. May God add his blessings to each of your special days. Mini Message: Believing in heaven Someone said to me today whose beloved recently passed away "I hope heaven is real." I told her it is! How am I certain of this? Because the Bible tells me so. I Peter:1-4 says "For God has reserved a priceless inheritance for his children. It is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay." Where Paul says that we may look forward to the joys of heaven, he is emphasizing the security of the believers. If you're not a believer you will also have a secure place in eternity, but it will not be heaven. The choice is ours, believe and spend eternity with Christ in heaven or choose an eternity of damnation in hell with Satan. Choose wisely. Until next week—Look only to Christ. Stam God tells us in His Word that believers are "justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 3:24). The word "freely," here, does not mean "without cost," but "without cause." The same original word is so translated in John 15:25, where we find the words of Christ: "They hated Me without a cause." Thus sinners hated Christ "without a cause," yet God justifies sinners "without a cause."How can this be? Let's see: What had Christ done to earn the enmity of men? Nothing whatever. He had been kind and good, had helped those in distress, had healed their sick, had made the dumb to speak, the deaf to hear, the blind to see, and the lame to leap for joy. Why, then, did they hate Him: The Bible says they hated Him "without a cause, i.e., without any cause in Him. The cause of their hatred lay in their own evil hearts. But on the other hand, what have sinners done to merit justificationå answer is: Nothing whatever. They have broken His commandments every day, lying, stealing, and committing hundreds of other sins. Yet in love God gave His Son to die for them on Calvary "that He might be just and [at the same time] the Justifier of him that believeth in Jesus" (Romans 3:26). He loves and justifies believers "without a cause", i.e., without any cause in them. The cause is to be found in His own compassionate heart, for "God is love." Thus those who trust in Christ, who died for our sins, are justified without a cause, by God's grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. "God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). "By this man is preached…the forgiveness of sins, and by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which He could not be justified by the law of Moses" (Acts 13:38, 39). By Clyde Dupin "Some call it a holy war" The two Kingdoms on earth have never been more evident. Our secular culture has declared war on God's Kingdom as we enter 2013. On December 17, 2012 one of the most liberal magazines, "Newsweek" ran another article attacking most things the Bible teaches about Jesus. On the cover Bart Ehrman asks, "Who was Jesus?" In the story he talked about the myths of Jesus. Myths best describes his article. There are many attacks today on Christianity and the Bible. I observe the elite news media, our present government, educators and even religious leaders are often the greatest enemy of Christianity. This group comes from the far left and actually is a small minority but is vocal while Christians sleep. It is encouraging to see some brave leaders speaking out for truth. Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham says, "America is on the fast track to God's judgment. He speaks of the sin of abortion and same sex marriage as signs of coming judgment on America. Well-known author and pastor, Rick Warren, told his people before the election to vote as Christians. He mentioned that Christians should protect the unborn, view sex as holy and protect traditional marriage. Warren said, "If you call yourself a Christian you must line up with what God says." California pastor Jim Garlow led the protest against same-sex marriage and won. lt has been appealed but Christians everywhere should pray that family values win. I believe Christians and pastors, in particular, Continued on page 6 Brenton Chapel Church of Christ 1194 E. Co. Rd. 400 N.
