From left are Chris Satterfield, Nathan Harker, Jerry Grubb, Superintendent Suzanne Blake, Treasurer Krista Halbrader, David Waltz and Chris McKinney. Grubb takes over as school board president By Mike Johansen Jerry Grubb was elected president of the Pike County School Corporation Board of Education Monday night as new members Nathan Harker and Chris McKinney attended their first regular meeting as official board members. McKinney and Harker had participated in executive sessions and board meetings as observers since being elected in the November elections, but did not officially take office until the Jan. 1 and Monday night was their first official meeting. The first order of business was to elect the board officers for the coming year as well as several other yearly actions. Jerry Grubb, the longest serving member, was elected as president in a two-way race. David Waltz was the other board member nominated for the position. Waltz was the only board member nominated for vice-president and Chris McKinney was the only board member nominated for secretary. Both were unanimously elected. Val Fleig was named board attorney for the coming year. He submitted a letter with his rates noting that the basic cost would be $500 per month plus a few additional fees including $100 an hour for additional work not covered under the monthly fee. That is less than his normal rate. He had been the board attorney before, but has not served in that capacity the past couple of years. The vote was 3-2 in favor with Board members Chris Satterfield and David Waltz vot- ing against the motion. The board also voted to keep their salaries at the minimum of $2,000 per year plus they will receive 55.5 cents a mile for any travel. The meeting date was left at the second Monday of the month. They also approved special bonds for the school treasurers, food service director, day care directors, book store manager and any other employee who handles funds being covered under an umbrella bond. German American Bank will again be the depository bank for the school corporation funds. The School Board approved changes to the acceptable use policy for staff members which includes restrictions on the use of cell phones, computers, the type of programs allowed and allowable content on computers. It prohibits any objectionable material and any extra computer applications that are not pre-approved by the corporation. There were also a few other minor restrictions in the policy. The fee structure for the Pampered Chargers Day Care Center was again approved with some additional fees that had been part of the previous structure and not included in the new fee structure previously approved. The Board gave their approval to charge $110 a week for the first child, $100 for the second and $90 for the third from the same family for a full week of day care. They also set the daily rate at $26 a day, $24 for a second child and $22 for a third child for up to three days in day care. The half day rate was established at $18. There is also an hourly rate of $5 an hour and a drop off rate of $29 a day. The changes were enacted to meet the rising costs of the operation of the day care center, which is on a self-supporting basis. The School Board also adopted an Energize Savings Plan for the schools in the corporation. They will replace lighting in all the schools in common areas and other designated areas that currently have 400 watt bulbs. The new bulbs will be 200 watts in power but will be as bright and provide as much light as the old lighting. The first year savings is projected at more than $12,000 in electrical costs and the second year the savings should be $15,000 to the school corporation. The cost to the school district to begin with will be just under $2,300. After the bulbs are installed, they will receive rebates from the electric companies involved at each school at $85 per light for all but Otwell, it will be a little less there because they are under WIN Energy. The school staff will install the new lighting to save on labor costs. The Pike County School Corporation Board of Education also approved: • Fuel escalation costs for 21 days of bus travel in January at $1.04 above the contract price per gallon, totaling $5,831.28. • Cancelling several checks from 2010 issued through Pike Central High School accounts that have not been cashed. • Jeremy Howald, Kim Nalley and Ryne Biesterveld to provide home bound instruction during the second semester. • Accepting a grant from the United Way of Pike County for $1,250 for IPads for Otwell Elementary School. • Accepting a $20,000 grant from Duke Energy and the donation of eight executive chairs from Kimball of Jasper for Project Lead the Way. • Requests for fundraising activity from Pike Central High School, Middle School, Otwell Elementary and Petersburg Elementary. • Use of the gyms at the high school, middle school and elementary schools with the normal fees being charged for A AU basketball tournaments for boys March 8-10 and for girls March 1-3. • T he Pike Central cheerleaders attending a competition in Louisville Feb. 23. • The FFA program attending a show in Louisville Feb. 23 and attending the state FFA convention June 17-19. • Dr. Mary Sandifar attending a state conference in Indianapolis Feb. 20-22. • Phillip Clauss attending HECC Board Meetings and Conference on Jan. 25, March 7-8, Sept. 6 and Nov. 12-15. • The resignations of Cassandra Craig as Pike Central High School girls track head coach effective immediately and Phyllis Whitehead as a bus driver, with thanks from the board for their years of service.
