NOVEMBER 2012 HOMES PLUS Windows continued from Page 4 price point, but they can be extremely hard to install for the layperson. If you do not install them incorrectly, youre in for some real problems. Binder said homeowners are asking more questions these days: Lately, Ive had people ask good questions, whereas eight years ago all they knew was that they wanted new windows. Is it possible to put too much insulation in your home? Apparently you can. A home with too much insulation can in essence asphyxiate a house and prevent it from breathing. If they dont breathe, they can get mold and wood rot. Binder said a roof can heat up without good insulation; that melts the snow: Thats how people lose heat. I tell my customers they have to be in the house for a year before they can tell if they have poor ventilation or weatherization. Randy Wright is the owner of RW Windows in Waukesha. There are different brands of windows at varying quality, Wright said. He said a lot of customers arent that knowledgeable about window products. There are a lot of things that go into the construction of the window. If you come off a hard winter and they finally give the green light to their plans, Wright said. Sometimes its a decision that was made two or three years before they decided to go forward. Wright said with new construction homes, the highest quality windows arent always used. He said the average consumer doesnt know how energy efficient the proper windows can make your home. There are a lot of components, Wright said. Your furnace is important insulation. Wright said when people buy a home they just assume all windows are the same. Im a window and door company, a window consultant. Ill come into your home and help you decide which windows will work best for you, he said. If a window is rotting, Wright said a homeowner cant afford to wait a couple of years. If youre a salesman with Pella or Anderson, those are the only windows you can sell. Im in business for myself, so I can explain what different windows are available for different budgets and price points. Plastic will help if someone cant afford to replace their windows, saving to make that happen. Wright said if youre feeling air come through your windows or if ice is forming on the interior of the window, youve got a leak: You probably need new windows. If you get to that point, theres not much you can do. 228787002 FULL SERVICE LAWN CARE Lawn Reseeding Fertilization Fall Clean-Up HOME COMFORT SYSTEMS Innovation never felt so good. Whatever the size of your home or budget, Lennox has a home comfort system thats right for you.
