NOVEMBER 2012 HOMES PLUS Protecting your home from the elements Proper weatherization includes selecting the right windows By Jim Cryns SPECIAL TO HOMES PLUS WAUKESHA ��� If you want to hold on to some of your hard-earned money and keep from watching it seep out through leaks in your windows, it���s a good idea to make sure your home is well-insulated and weatherized. Weatherization would include plugging and sealing of air leaks. That type of weatherization can save you 25 percent to 40 percent on your heating and cooling bills. The average house that has poor weatherization leaks air at a rate equivalent to a four-foot-square hole in the wall. ���The key to any installation is insulation on windows and sliding doors,��� said Abby Binder, owner of Milwaukee-based Abby Windows. Binder has been in the window business for eight years and she said it���s important for builders and installers to fill key insulation points. ���If you don���t insulate, you���ll have ice forming and that can cause problems,��� she said. Putting plastic sheeting on windows is a form of weatherization homeowners have practiced on their own for years. It���s often called a shrink kit. You can go to any hardware store, pick up a kit, stick the plastic over the windows and stretch it out by using a hair dryer. ���Plastic on your windows can work if you can feel wind coming through your windows or doors,��� Binder said. ���Honeycomb blinds work well, too, but they can get pricey.��� She explained homeowners should be cautious when purchasing windows and avoid inexpensive, discount windows. ���There is a naive perception of cost versus quality,��� Binder said. In short, you can get what you pay for.
