Sometimes the decorations and adornments of a home or business are able to extract a little more goodwill. We saw this as a great opportunity, said Mike Hilborn, owner of Roof to Deck Decoration, a company that has made neighborhoods shine since 2007. He said proper lighting could speak to something inside, something primordial. Really getting down to it, that happens with lights. When I bring out a sample with the lights, once you plug them in, the whole presentation changes. With offices in Milwaukee, Chicago and Minnesota, Hilborn said the busy season for decks runs through October. Thats when the lighting aspect of his business kicks into in high gear. Its a short season, Hilborn said, but the two businesses (decks and lighting) work per- fectly in our seasons. When some of the deck work quiets down in the fall, the company switches gears for the winter. Hilborn said his company does a lot of roofing work, so he already has employees that are comfortable working high above the ground. There is a safety factor involved, a plus in having someone install your lighting. He said the last thing anybody needs is to take a fall while installing lights. If you do something all the time, like being on a roof, you get good at the work, more efficient, Hilborn said. Roof to Deck Decoration will provide lights, help with design and oversee the maintenance. Hilborn said customers have the option of purchasing their own lights, but cautions them on the need for storage and keeping them in working condition. Renting lights has its advantages, Hilborn said: If youre renting, Im responsible for them. If theyre chewed up, a bulb fails, well be out there. Lots can go wrong. A squirrel can chew through the strand of lights, wear and tear can break down the wiring.
