He was born on Dec. 12, 1944, in Oakland City, to Ralph and Edna ( Winniger) Newkirk. He graduated from Char- lottesville High School. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam and was very proud of the fact he was a paratrooper with the 173th Airborne Brigade. He was a Deputy Sheriff in Hancock County, Ind., for 13 years and did missionary work for 10 years in Mexico, South America, Canada and several states. His great pas- sion was being an evangelist minster. He is survived by his be- loved wife of 30 years, Bin- nie Newkirk, of Winslow; children, Becky Newkirk, of Fortville, Deborah ( Jim) Heede, of Carmel, Mar- gie Brinson, of Rockville, Tenn., Hugh (Becki) Brin- son, of French Lick, Shelly Newkirk, of Ingalls, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Jessi- ca Newkirk, of Winslow; brothers, Ralph Newkirk, of Knightstown, Ind., and Ken- ny Newkirk, of Indianapolis; 11 grand children and three great-grandchildren; sever- al nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sis- ter, Mary Catt; and son, Jer- emy A. Newkirk, on March 5, 2017. Service was at 1 p.m. CDT on Monday July 30, 2018, at the Lamb-Basham Memo- rial Chapel, with Rev. Lar- ry Stoops officiating. Burial followed in Williams Ceme- tery. Byrn, 82, of Oak- land City, entered into rest on Sunday July 29, 2018, at Deaconess Gateway Hospi- tal in Newburgh, surround- ed by his family. He was born on Dec. 16, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., to Wilburn Byrn and Mary Golden Hickerson. A fter high school, he grad- uated from the Detroit Po- lice Academy. He served in the United States Army and was a member of F.&A.M. Masonic Lodge #467 in Oak- land City. He served as a Vol- unteer Fireman for several years. He was an avid bowl- er, earning the nickname "Lefty," passing his love of bowling on to his grandson, Keaton. He enjoyed ball- room dancing with his wife, Jan. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and IU bas- ketball, making countless memories sharing this love with his children and grand- children. He had worked at Prestolite Battery Compa- ny, Farmer and Son Insur- ance Agency, Old Ben Coal, Uebelhor Oil Company, T.J. Maxx and Lamb-Basham Memorial Chapel. A fter re- tirement, he enjoyed spend- ing his days with the chil- dren at his daughter's day- care. He is survived by his son, Kent ( Vickie) Byrn, of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Kathi (Troy) Green, of Princeton; a sister, Janice Summers, of Detroit, Mich.; grandchil- dren, Jason ( Jamie) Byrn, of Hendersonville, Tenn., Nicolette Byrn, of Evans- ville, Ami Jo (Ryan) Kober- stein, of Evansville, Russell Green and Keaton Green, of Princeton; and great-grand- children, Stella Rian, Fynn Daniel, Thatcher Leo and Sunni Jo Koberstein, and Reed Jameson and Layne Joseph Byrn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 54 years, Jan Byrn, in 2009; and a nephew. JOYCE EVELYN ARTHUR Joyce Evelyn Arthur, 88, passed away July 25, 2018, in Evansville. She was born June 14, 1930, in Daviess County, to John and Zelma Goodwin. She worked as a bank teller and clerk for Citizens State Bank and was also a lifelong member of Mt. Gil- ead Church. She is survived by her son, Gary ( Jane) DeMotte; step-daughters, Lana Spal- ding and Marsha (Bill) Pemberton; grandchildren, Amy (Scott) Feldmeier, Er- ic ( Joanna) DeMotte, Kim ( Joe) Robinson and Calla DeMotte; step-grandchil- dren, Joshua Buente, Holly Goss and Christy Minton; 11 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Nolan (Shirley) Goodwin and Bill (Ginny) Goodwin; and sister, Cleo (Malcom) Radcliff. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Marion DeMotte; second husband, Robert Arthur; a son, Ron- nie DeMotte; her parents; a brother, Ivan Goodwin; three sisters, Orma Grimm, Roberta Brower and Doris Allison; step-son-in-law, Bill Spalding; brother-in-law, Dr. Roy (Arlena) DeMotte; and two sisters-in-law, Cleo (Frances) Crawl and Deloris (Charles) Cutterige. Condolenc- es may be made online at odharrisfuneralhome.com. LOIS E. WILSON Lois E. Wilson, 78, passed away at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Oakland City, on Thursday July 26, 2018. She was born on January 10, 1940, in Evansville, to Edward J. Ballew and Mil- dred (McNeely) Ballew. She graduated from Bosse High School in 1957 and married the love of her life, Ronald K. Wilson, on June 22, 1957. Together they raised two children, Tammy and Brian. She was employed by National City Bank before moving to Petersburg in 1970. She was active in Girl Scouts during the 1970s, was the first workshop su- pervisor for P.C.A.R.C., and was a member, elder, trea- surer and secretary at Main Street Presbyterian Church. Prior to retirement in 2002, she was employed by Citi- zens State (German Amer- ican) Bank. She enjoyed traveling with Ron and loved being around her children, grand- children and great-grand- children. She enjoyed writ- ing and had several pen pals throughout her life. She en- joyed watching the birds from her kitchen window, loving on her cat, Speedy, and playing cards with friends. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ron- ald; two children, Tamara L. (Mike) Keech, of Cabot, Ark., and Brian K. (Terri) Wilson, of Jasper; a brother, Vernon (Margaret) Ballew, of Evansville; 20 grandchil- dren and 18 great-grandchil- dren. GARY R AY KUEBLER Gary Ray Kuebler, 74, of Jasper, passed away at 3:35 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at home. He was born in Jasper on September 24, 1943, to Charles W. and Alma (Kro- del) Kuebler Wagoner. His father, Charles, was killed in W WII in 1945. He was a truck driver for Holland Dairy and then for Tri-State Live Haul. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jasper, the Sons of the American Legion, Winslow and Jasper Outdoor Recreation. He en- joyed playing cards, visiting the casino, was an avid NA- SCAR Fan and he collected Zippo lighters. Surviving are six chil- dren, Bret Kuebler, of Hunt- ingburg, Ann Smith, of Jas- per, Barb (Rex) Gibson, of Jasper, Brenda Loveless, and her companion, Keith Traylor, of Velpen, Charles ( Joanie) Kuebler, of Jasper, and Paula Fleck, of Hunt- ingburg; his mother, Alma Kuebler Wagoner, of Jas- per; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Karen (Edward) Young, of Jasper, Sandi (Er- nie) Conley, of Washington, Donna Thompson, of Tell City, and Jayne (Tim) Mat- tingly, of Henderson, Ky. Preceding him in death were his father, Charles W. Kuebler; one grandson, Cody Lee Anderson; one sis- ter, Elaine Schipp; and one brother, Ronald Kuebler. A Mass of Christian Buri- al was at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2018, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jasper, with burial that followed in Fairview Cemetery in Jas- per. BET TY JANE (DILLEY) SMITH Betty Jane (Dilley) Smith, of Winslow, age 91, passed away at 9:37 a.m. on Tues- day, July 17, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper. Betty was born on Octo- ber 12, 1926, in Petersburg, to the late Ellet and Nan- nie Pearl ( Williams) Dilley. She married Robert "Red" Smith on April 20, 1946, and they made their home in Winslow. Four daughters were born into this union: Nila, Brenda, Linda, and Sylvia. Betty was a member of the Winslow Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #391. She was a 1945 graduate of Peters- burg High School. She re- tired from the Pike Coun- ty Treasurer Office after 28 years of service. Surviving Betty are daughters, Nila D. (Mau- rice) Howard, Columbus, Ind., Linda S. (Michael) O'Connell, Bloomington, and Sylvia A. Smith, of Jas- per; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Kel- ly, Andrea, Leslie, Lisa, Jo- seph, Sean, and Krystle; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary C. Engleman, of Koko- mo, and a brother, Paul Dil- ley, of Kentucky. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Rob- ert "Red" Smith; daughter, Brenda L. Kress; parents; sisters, Ellone Bartlow, Ir- ma Lowe, Francis Minnis; and brothers, Victor and Don Dilley. Cremation was chosen, and a graveside service will be Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Oakhill Ceme- tery in Winslow, with Dr. Robert Asa officiating. ROYAL L. DOWNEN Royal L. Downen, 67, of Vincennes, passed away at 10 p.m., Sunday, July 29, 2018, at Gentle Care Nurs- ing Home. He was born in Vincennes on October 25, 1950, to Sam and Hazel (Thorne) Downen. He graduated from the first class of South Knox High School in 1968 and was a lifelong farmer. He en- joyed farm stock tractor pull- ing and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid fan of Indiana Univer- sity, Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers. His fa- mous Five P's of Life were Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Vic- tor (Karen) Downen, of Vincennes, Tony (Caro- lyn) Downen, of Vincennes, Martha "Duffer" Downen, of Vincennes, Robert (Car- ol) Downen, of Wheatland, Gloria (Earl) Worland, of Linton, Sandra ( James) Hall, of Alabama, Rachel Lowe, of Alabama, Georgia (Al) Stasulis, of Mississippi, John Downen, of New York; along with several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-neph- ews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sis- ter, Mary Abigail Downen; and two brothers, Paul Ad- DONALD R AY WARNER Donald Ray Warner, 75, of Petersburg, passed away on July 29, 2018, at his resi- dence. He was born on Jan- uary 29, 1943, in Petersburg to Stanley and Bernice War- ner. Don worked as an insur- ance salesman for Pruden- tial Insurance for many years. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Petersburg and attended the Brenton Chapel Church of Christ in Petersburg. Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Warner, of Petersburg; son, Brett (Rhonda) Warner, of Petersburg; grandchil- dren, Zac (Amy) Warner and Shawn (Kinzee) War- ner; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Colt, Cali, Sophee, and Jett Warner; sisters in law, Patti Warner and Mar- tha Pipes. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, An- gie Warner, who passed in 2005; and brother, Ed War- ner. Services for Don will take place on Thursday, August 2, at 11 a.m. at Harris Fu- neral Home in Petersburg. Harris Funeral Home is entrusted with care. BOBBIE H. KELL Bobbie H. Kell, 88, of Pe- tersburg, entered rest on Sunday July 29, 2018, at Golden Living Center in Pe- tersburg. She was born on Feb. 20, 1930, in Glezen, to William and Eunice ( Willis) Hadlock. She was a member First General Baptist Church in Oakland City. She and Ray- mond resided in Oakland City for 40 years before mov- ing to Chandler, and then to Petersburg where she was a resident of Golden Living Center. She enjoyed cook- ing, baking, sewing, read- ing and listening to Gospel Music. She loved her fami- ly deeply and enjoyed spend- ing every moment she could with them. Her relationship with Jesus Christ was her first love in her life, and she served him faithfully until she departed this life for her heavenly home. She is survived by her daughter, Beth A. (Frank) Coleman, of Petersburg; sons, Lanny J. (Sheila) Kell, of Oakland City, and Dane Lee ( Jana) Kell, of Granite City, Ill.; seven grandchil- dren; 20 great-grandchil- dren; several nieces and nephews. Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two step sisters; JAMES FREDERICK "JIM" KELLEY James Frederick "Jim" Kelley, of Louisville, Ky. passed away June 27, 2018, at his home in Louisville. He was born May 1, 1947, to Gil- bert and Mary Helen (Har- ris) Kelley. Survivors include his wife, Clara; daughter, Rhon- da Kneeling and son Eddie Kneeling, all of Louisville; sisters, Brenda Alexander and Helen Kasey, of Owens- boro, Ky and Ellen Odem, of Ft. Branch; brothers, David and Danny Kelley, of Owens- boro, Bill Head, of Frank- fort, Ky., Kenny Kelley of Knoxville, Tenn. and Ben- jamin "Benny," of Winslow.
