During its 50 years, Summerfest has been a memory maker for millions of people. The numbers are impressive for the 11-day event: about 850,000 people from Milwaukee and around the world attend each year listen to 800 acts with more than 1,000 performances on 11 stages. The dates for this year's Summerfest are June 28 through July 2 and July 4 through July 9 from noon until midnight. Summerfest will be closed July 3. Some of the most famous musical acts in the world have performed at Summerfest, including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Whitney Houston. This year promises to be another strong year for music from local musicians and international stars, such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, The Chainsmokers and Luke Bryan. Some of the Milwaukee- area acts are GGOLLDD and Fortune on June 29, 4 on the Floor on June 30, and Ryan McIntyre on July 7. Almost as big a draw as the music these days is the variety of food offered by vendors. Each year, restaurants try to outdo one another. Some of this year's new offerings include Cedar Crest's Waffle Nachos Hot Fudge Sundae (vanilla ice cream with hot fudge, waffle nachos, whipped cream and cherry) and a Walking Pasta (four cocktail meatballs in tomato sauce on a toothpick with bow tie pasta and garlic bread) at Pitch's & Miss Katie's Diner. As to be expected, 50 is a common theme during Summerfest. A retrospective exhibit called "Summerfest 50" presented by Pick 'n Save will celebrate Summerfest's history with a series of his- torical exhibits that depict 50 years of iconic moments. The three-pronged exhibit will feature a traveling dis- play, a summerlong exhibit at the Milwaukee County Historical Society and an onsite exhibit at Summerfest. The series will illustrate decades of festival highlights through large graphic panels and displays of original posters, banners, and vintage memorabilia. Also for sale is the "50 Years of Smiles" commemo- rative book that illustrates the history of rock 'n' roll through the evolution of Summerfest and features photos of renowned artists that have appeared over the past 50 years. Throwback Thursday will be held June 29 from noon to 6 p.m. and will feature a col- lection of music through the decades from artists like Foghat, Berlin featuring Terri Nunn, Tommy Tutone Band, Fishbone, Slaughter, The Suburbs, The Church, and Soul Asylum. From noon until 6 p.m. all bever- ages will be 50 percent off. The Big Bang Fireworks display will start at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, opening night of the 50th anniversary run.
