4 • Milwaukee County Post • June 23, 2017 Milwaukee Bucks hire Jon Horst as general manager The Milwaukee Bucks last week announced the hiring of Jon Horst, 34, as general manager. Horst served as the team's director of operations since 2008. "Our No. 1 priority is to build championship-caliber organization and we believe Jon is the right person to be our General Manager," said Bucks owners Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jamie Dinan in a news release. The ownership said Horst helped advise them on every major deci- sion since the purchase of the team in 2014. Horst began his NBA front office career with the Detroit Pistons in 2005. "I'm extremely grateful to our ownership group for their faith and trust in me," Horst said in a statement. He also said he looked forward to working with coach Jason Kidd in continuing to build the team. He replaces John Hammond, who left the Bucks in May to become general manager with the Orlando Magic. Hammond had one year left on his contract, which was expected to be a transition year for Assistant GM Justin Zanik before taking the reins. The Bucks, however, opened up the search. Zanik was said to be one of the three final- ists for the GM job. The Bucks, celebrating their 50th season in 2017-18, have franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo locked up for four years. The team plans to move into its new arena under construction downtown for the 2018- 19 season. The Bucks also have a developmental team, the Wisconsin Herd, beginning its first season in November at a new arena in Oshkosh. WEEK IN REVIEW STATE AND LOCAL STORIES OF INTEREST Program aims to increase learning opportunities MILWAUKEE — The Department of Public Instruction unveiled a new effort on Monday to encourage innovation, increase educational equity, and remove barriers that schools may face in helping all students graduate college and career ready. The Districts of Innovation program was developed from recommendations by the State Superintendent's Innovation Work Group, in consultation with state Reps. Eric Genrich, D-Green Bay, and John Macco, R-DePere. While school boards have requested exemptions from state laws or administrative rules, the scope has generally been narrow as opposed to the more comprehensive approach offered through the Innovation Districts program. Applicants for Districts of Innovation must detail how their proposal aligns to their district's strategic direction, demonstrate how their request for an exemption will increase educational equity or improve outcomes for their students and how they will evaluate their success. Residents warned of IRS phone scam MILWAUKEE — The Internal Revenue Service warns of a new variation on an old phone scam, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said. Phone scammers have recently begun telling taxpayers that they failed to respond to two certified letters from the agency and that they risk arrest if an immediate payment is not made by prepaid debit card, the DATCP said. The scammer falsely claims that the debit card is linked to the IRS's payment system and warns the victim not to contact their tax preparer, an attorney or the local IRS office until the payment is made. It is likely that these scammers are playing off of the recent news that the IRS has begun using four approved debt-collection companies to assist in collecting debts that are more than two years old. Those taxpayers affected by this change will actually receive two letters to inform them that they will be contacted by one of these companies — one letter will come from the IRS directly and the other will be from the collection company, the DATCP said. There is additional information about the debt collection program on the IRS website. This new ploy has yet to be reported to the DATCP by Wisconsin consumers, but the agency is expecting the calls. The current scheme consumers are reporting to DATCP involves a fake IRS agent threatening lawsuits and demanding immediate payment. Wisconsin consumers need to remember that any threatening call demanding immedi- ate tax payments is a scam. Illegal calls can be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration through its IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting web page or by calling 800-366-4484. If you question your current tax status, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040. Wauwatosa man, 94, dies at US Open TOWN OF ERIN — Marshall Jacobs, 94, died June 16 while watching the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. He appeared to have died of natural causes, authorities said. At about 1:25 p.m. deputies and emergency responders from Hartford Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the grandstand at the sixth hole, where the elderly man, a Wauwatosa resident, was reported pulseless and not breathing, a Washington County Sheriff's Office news release reported. No foul play is suspected. The United States Golf Association said in a release it is saddened a spectator died. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those surrounding this individual during this diffi- cult time," USGA officials said in their statement. West Allis man charged after fatal crash WEST ALLIS — A 32-year-old West Allis man has been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle in the death of Zachary B. 'Star Trek' actor Takei shares video of helpful bus driver MILWAUKEE — A video of a Milwaukee County Transit System driver helping a lost girl was shared by actor George Takei on Monday. Brendan Conway, spokesman for MCTS, said it's the second time the video went viral since MCTS posted it to its Facebook page on May 2. The video is of MCTS driver Tiffani Lee as she pulls over on Oklahoma Avenue after seeing a 5-year-old girl walking alone at 8:30 a.m. on April 21. Conway said it was a chilly morning and Lee recalled that the girl was wearing one flip-flop and one shoe, looking very lost. When Lee opened the door to the bus, she told the girl to come in. Lee then followed protocol and called the dispatch office, who promptly contacted the police. Within five minutes the West Allis Police showed up and brought the girl home safely. Conway said this was one of three events since October in which MCTS drivers have helped lost children find their way back home.
