Heaggan-Brown, who is also A f r i c a n - A m e r i c a n , was acquitted by a M i l w a u k e e County jury f o l l o w i n g deliberations that began T u e s d a y , according to reports by m u l t i p l e media outlets. The 12-member jury trial included four African Americans. Heaggan-Brown was fired from his job in the fall for an unrelated incident. L o o t i n g and burning in the Sher- man Park area i m m e d i at e ly followed the s h o o t i n g death of Smith, a M i l w a u k e e resident. The Mil- waukee Fire Department estimated Jet Beauty sustained a 50 percent loss from the fire that erupted at the height of the rioting, while a BMO Harris branch had a 25 percent loss. A BP gas station, which was the target of the rioting, and O'Reilly Auto Parts each sus- tained a total loss, according to the MFD's analysis. The state initially earmarked $2 million in grant money after the riot for neighborhood rehabil- itation. The funds were expected to raze about 100 dilapidated homes within the neighborhood. The public and community activists waited months for the release of video that was turned over to Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm.
