Place a memorial in the Milwaukee County Post newspaper. DEADLINES ARE TUESDAY (2pm) FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKEND PAPER. 255317040 MILWAUKEE — While the exact cir- cumstances leading to David Clarke Jr.'s withdrawal as a candidate from the Department of Homeland Security are unclear, what has come into sharp focus is the ongoing strain between the sheriff and the county's top leader. Clarke, who has been Milwaukee County's sheriff since 2002, announced through a spokesperson last weekend he rescinded acceptance of a position he claims he was offered in the Department of Homeland Security. This week, as it became clear Clarke would remain Milwaukee County sheriff, the sparring with County Executive Chris Abele continued in a series of tersely worded statements. Abele in his state- ment said he was pleased Clarke was no longer in the running for a federal-level posi- tion focused on nation- al security. "I urge Sheriff Clarke to submit his resignation and allow Milwaukee to turn the page," Abele said in the statement. "I am sure Gov. (Scott) Walker will appoint a good successor, and I look forward to working with whomever that is." In a follow-up to Abele's comments, Clarke through his spokeswoman indicat- ed he had no plans of stepping down as sheriff now that the DHS position is no longer in the equation. Clarke's current term ends in November 2018. "Abele is pissed I will be sheriff until January 2019, at a minimum," Clarke said in the statement. "I will resign right after that little mouse does." Clarke in mid-May went on conserva- tive talk show host Vicky McKenna's show and said he was offered the DHS position and would relinquish his duties as sheriff at some point in June. The fed- eral agency, however, did not confirm nor deny any such appointment. Clarke, who declined any further com- ment on the appointment after the radio interview, said he was going to use his areas of expertise in local law enforce- ment and apply them to a liaison role with state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies and governments. Efforts to reach Clarke or his spokes- woman for comment on the reason for the rescinded offer were unsuccessful by press deadline. — Dave Fidlin, Special to the Post Clarke,Abele spar as sheriff withdraws name from federal post Volume 23, issue number 25 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
