As you draw nearer to Los Molinos you may want to check out Wild Willy's Smokehouse (200-0656) [TT-12.5] where you can learn about or purchase unique wood-pellet fired smoker/grills or find just the right BBQ sauce, rub, cook- book or accessory for savory outdoor cooking. Ashort walk along the property line will take you to a refreshing swim- ming hole on Mill Creek where Ishi, the renowned last wild Indian, used to fish and hunt. One more mile down the high- way in Los Molinos you will find local markets and places to get great food like Mill Creek Restaurant, Jack's Restaurant, the Burger Shack and Roxie Deli and BBQ. All feature prompt and friendly service and air conditioned com- fort. As you drive south the highway runs parallel to the railroad tracks that first put Los Molinos on the map. The high- way intersects with Vina Road eight Smiles await, along with chandler walnuts, at Bianchi Orchards. miles south of Los Molinos where you will come upon Lassen Steak House (839-2838) [TT-20.0]. This full service restaurant features a fabulous bar {pic 4}, a wine tasting room, cowboy sized steaks and burgers and other staples with all the fixin's. At this point you can either continue south on Highway 99 to see the Sierra mountains and cattle roaming the Vina plains or you can turn west on Vina Road toward the Abbey of New Clairvaux (839-2161), the first Cistercian Monastery in the Americas to grow its own grapes and bottle its own wine. After you enter Vina continue on 7th Street thru the railroad crossing and you will see a white cross and signs to guide your way. The bookstore, located in the Welcome Center immediately on your right after entering the monastic property, is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and from noon till 1pm on Sundays. to serve as the centerpiece of a building project planned to surpass that of San Simeon, but the sacred stones remained scattered about Golden Gate State Park until being awarded to the Abbey for assembly on Cistercian land once again. There are many other interesting places to visit in these parts, particularly olive orchards and oil producers should you return to Red Bluff via Corning and Highway 99 West. At New Clairvaux the dedicated labors of Trappist monks and the skilled hands of a fifth generation winemaker bring together the traditions of European grape growing and winemaking. In addition to visiting the welcome center and tasting room, where you may pur- chase the wines, you can tour the vineyard and visit the Chapter House construc- tion project, a stone structure originally built in Spain between 1190 and 1220.
