The museum is located at 1386 Fond du Lac Street in West Bend at the top of the Barton Hill. Go to the Historical Society's web site for the hours of operation and to see photos of this unique site. The well-kept grounds are a quiet vista that opens up at the top of the city. The views are unmatched and the histo- ry goes back to the begin- ning of the europesn pres- ence. This is a truly histor- ical location for the state of Wisconsin, as well as Washington County. It's hard not to get enthusias- tic about the importance of this place, especially since it's so close to us. Anyone reading In Good Taste knows that I love history and am a self- admitted history geek. Well, when I was at the Rectory, I met a couple of ladies that were discussing the informative placards that guided visitors through the rectory. I added a couple of factoids that I've picked up about Fr Rehrl and the Agnesian Sisters and we talked about life in those chal- lenging times. I learned that the ladies had con- nections to West Bend. Cathy Slesar and Diana Hupfer said that they were excited to visit the muse- um on the special exhibit day and wanted to see how the sisters of the convent lived over 150 years ago. Before I left Cathy and Diana, I asked if they would help us with this week's recipe. Diana said that she would be happy to dig deep for a recipe that would be reminiscent of the foods of that time frame. Be sure to visit the muse- ums at 320 S. 5th Ave. in West Bend for the Old Courthouse Museum, the adjacent building for the Old Sheriff's Residence and Jail museum, 1386 Fond du Lac St. in West Bend for the Father Rehrl's Rectory at St. Agnes Historic Site, and moving to the new loca- tion in the Courthouse Museum, the West Bend Co. /Regal Ware exhibit. All of these sites, as well as additional details, can be found at HistoryIsFun.com or by calling 262-335-4678. A untie Dean's Almond Bars This week's recipe comes from an old recipe of the fellow visitors to Fr Rehrl's Rectory. Diana explains that this comes from her great-grand- mother's recipe box. Diana explained to me that the original, but now obsolete, Butterine was just uncol- ored oleo and butter. Both Diana and her cousin, Janie Kreis, have substi- tuted lard for the oleo in the Butterine with great results. What You'll Need: 1 c. Butterine (half butter and half oleo) 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. baking soda 8 oz. chopped almonds 5 cups flour What To Do: Mix all ingredients togeth- er and form four long rolls. Refrigerate overnight or freeze if desired to keep longer. Cut into thin slices and bake on lightly greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. The newly restored Fr Rehrl Rectory tures town ponds, a trestle and a 30-foot underground tunnel. Will also be show- ing train videos. All rides are free. Donations are appreciated.
