Brianna Trackmier A&E Editor Hailie Willey Staff Writter Kaylie Capps Staff Writer Jay Boone Staff Writer Lexi Pritchard Topics Editor For the Red Bluff High School Varsity football team, Homecoming has a different meaning. "At Homecoming, if feels like there is more support from everyone compared to other games," said senior Sam Hendricks. Junior Ryan Gamboa commented on this statement saying, "For being only my second year of football, I think it will be fun. Adrenaline will be pumping, and I think it will be a blast." Tonight's game is against Paradise at Red Bluff, and it will start at 7:30. "Homecoming is the only game out of the whole season that everyone gets into it. There is more support from the community, more than a normal home game," Gamboa said. The Varsity team has only won two games this season, but they feel like they can beat Paradise. "I feel like we are ready and prepared," Junior Robert Baumgartner said. The swim season is starting to draw close to the end and the team is continuing to work hard if not harder than ever before. Practice are usually pretty challenging especially if the swimmers do not come prepared as was explained by sophomore, Jacob Patterson. At the beginning of every practice the team starts off by doing a warm up ranging from four hundred to six hundred yards. After that each individual will do sprints of their favorite stroke or they will do three hundreds of the stroke that they will be competing in. After being asked how practices help to prepare him for the meets Jacob responded by saying, "They help me to improve my overall technique and lower my time." The team has had a good season thus Cleo DuFrain, a freshman at Red Bluff High, is in the top eight players who get to travel out of the team. "I'm the only freshman in the top eight on the team," stated DuFrain. DuFrain is number five on the team, Ginger Shaffer, a junior is number one, and Catherine Cumpton, a senior is number eleven "You have to be mentally and physically prepared for whatever course comes at you." There's a lot of work that goes into preparing for these big meets, or else you won't do as well as you would expect to do, no matter what." he said. This team has also been building their nerves so they try not to lose their focus on their work building up to and during their meets, whether they are here at Red Bluff or anywhere else. "I am always getting little reminders in my mind while I am running, such as to strive for a better time and do well." commented sophomore Autumn Sholzen. Scholzen is not going to Monterey, but she is fully aware of how prepared the Monterey runners have to be. "Workouts are more intense than the meets, but it's always proven to be good preparation for runs like Clam Beach or even Monterey." she said. For the Red Bluff High School cross country members who are going to Monterey, they will not be here for the Homecoming Rally or the games, but they will be running their hearts out on the shores of the Bay. With preparation and constant adjustment, the Red Bluff boys JV football team has been readying themselves for one of their most important games of the season. Tonight's homecoming game is at 5:00 at Red Bluff High School and will be against Paradise High School. With a so far successful season record of 4-3 and a league record of 1-2. The boys have high hopes in bringing home another win this season. The team hopes, that with another win they are hopefully one step closer to recieving the league title. "We are really solid this year, we have a whole new offensive scheme and Coach Gilbert always makes up Varsity football preps for homecoming game after huge loss against panthers Practices help to prepare swimmers for end of season Cross Crountry runs their way to Monterey Jv football team gears up against Chico team Tennis team has the potential for a post- season berth to bring success to RBHS Ryan Gamboa commented on the statement about preparation by saying, "We are going to go through our normal routine, but we are going to be more serious because we want to win." After losing five games this season, the team thinks that there are a few things that could be improved. "We need to have less mental lapses," said Walker Dodero, senior. Another member of the Red Bluff Varsity football team, junior Carlos Rivera, said, "Everyone has to do their job for us to succeed." Football is a unique sport compared to others. Not only are the game plays different, but the way the teammates feel is different. Senior KJ Hinkston states, "You get a lot closer to people on the team compared to other sports." The teammates are very close and have a lot of confidence in each other. "I love my squad," Dodero said. In their last meet the girls came out on top bringing home a win and boys finished in second place. The team will be competing in the league championship meet on Thursday, October 23. As of October 14 the majority of the varsity team had already qualified for this meet and the other swimmers still had one last opportunity to qualify for their races. For those swimmers who did not qualify, their season has concluded and hopefully setting expectations and goals for next years swim season. In order to qualify swimmers must have finished their races under a certain time at some point throughout the season. Every team in our league will be competing against each other at this meet to advance to the section meet. This league championship meet will be held at Enterprise on October 23 at 11 AM. Today, October Seventeenth, Red Bluff High School's cross country team is down at Monterey Bay, in Monterey, for a big meet with many northern and southern California teams. This year's team is preparing hard and looking forward to this meet with a positive look on it. For these people, they have already had a beach run at their traditional Clam Beach meet, which is like a starting point for their beach run training. Each year at Clam Beach they camp out there and go on a huge run with other teams that counts for league. "Clam Beach was good for me because we had fun in the down time before the meet; we would play soccer and hang out with each other, and I also got ninth place out of the one hundred people running," said Sophomore Joseph Brunetta. As of last week, Brunetta didn't know yet whether or not he will be going to Monterey, but if he does, he will for sure be ready. solid defensive plays," said Travis Fite, sophomore. With a solid team the boys have set goals that they want to achieve in order to beat Paradises JV boys team. "Our main focus is to attack the weakest part of Paradises defense and stop their offense," said Eric Spencer, sophomore. Some of the things that the team feels will immensely help them in tonight's game is that the team plays as a unit, and their offense. Although with such strengths comes weaknesses, or things that negatively affect the team. "Injuries have affected us, we've had a lot of people injured over the course of the season, said Mason Meadows, sophomore. The nest game the JV football team will be playing is October 31 against Enterprise. Red Bluff High's Jv football team is practicing for tonight's homecoming game. on the team. "I haven't really had any accomplishments, so I don't really know," said Shaffer for when it comes to accomplishing anything as a tennis player this year. When it comes to continuing on to college with this sport Cumpton stated, "Yes, but maybe not on a competitive team, just be more fun if I wasn't on one." Cumpton has been playing tennis for about three years now and her biggest accomplishment she thinks is her serving. "My Grandparents are coaches" stated DuFrain when it came to who made you start playing this sport. The coaches for this years girls tennis team are Dennis and Jeannie Poulton. "I started playing tennis because I needed to get P.E. credits, so it was a way to get out of it," stated Cumpton. "Ups about this year are that our team is better than last year and the downs would be that is a harder division," stated Shaffer. The Red Bluff High Girls Tennis team's last game is on Thursday, October sixteenth at Shasta against Shasta's tennis team at their home court at 3:30. In the event that the tennis players succeed in winning their last game they will move on to post season.
