Custom-designed wall coverings were instrumental in creat- ing romance and dramatic elegance, with striated vinyl in the guest rooms, chocolate plaid in the corridors, and embroidered silk feathers in the suites' powder rooms. "As the design is based on a palette of neutrals rather than strong contrasts, the use of texture was important to add layers of interest and luxury to the design," says Thomas. "Designing and developing a wall cover is a complicated and intensive process requiring multiple revisions and sample reviews to get exactly the correct design, coloration, texture, and performance qualities." Thomas used grass cloth to suggest the richness of handwoven fiber in the Deluxe and Grand Deluxe rooms, while bespoke fabrics created horizontal textures with the same warm tones in the suites. Draperies are also custom, as are the suite bedrooms' metallic two- toned lamps, designed with a classic amphora shape that tapers at the base. Shades, trim, tops, and carpets were all revised with light- ness in mind. Flower paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe enhance the refreshed Deluxe and Grand Deluxe décor with relaxing, natural imagery. New sofas bring elegance to the suites: a frame in ivory velvet with cut-pile polka dots and herringbone-cut velvet cush- ions present a sleek, tailored look. Evocative of a residence yet as indulgent as a retreat, the one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites also have been elegantly refurbished with light and crisp décor. The bespoke wall fabrics, along with new sofas and carpeting, complete the spacious living area, drawing guests into the relaxed environment. Thomas replaced the suites' dining area chandeliers with the Venice Pendant, a fixture from the Roger Thomas Collection by Boyd Lighting, developed with the Wynn Tower redesign in mind. Its silk-covered petals enable shade via a faceted polished brass finial that Thomas designed to evoke cut-rock crystal. Wall coverings were relied on to make over other areas as well. "The bathrooms have been completely transformed with new coverings to create an airy oasis," says Thomas. "We've added cream crackle- stripe wall covers and white lacquer furniture pieces, creating a contemporary spa-like feel." That feel extends to the suites' spa treatment rooms, which now have in-wall iPod docking stations connected to updated sound systems. Larger LCD-screen televisions populate the living rooms and bathrooms. The corridors have new Matisse paintings and carpets, while The Spa at Wynn received its share of attention from Wynn Design. "Lighter and brighter," the spa was spruced with cream, gold, and caramel tones; new greeting lanterns; and bespoke silk wall coverings decorated with koi fish that ripple with a tranquil water effect. It's a little more heavenly than home, much as the rooms are more of an oasis than a residence, but a Wynn guest can reserve a room assured of one thing: accommodations designed to meet the highest standards. "I design with the same attention to detail that I give to personal spaces of the chairman of the board," says Thomas. "Because he, too, is a guest." n Wynn 81 80-81_Wynn_FEAT_Macau_Spring14.indd 81 5/14/14 3:05 PM
