Nutritionist to Speak at Gibson and Pike Retired Teachers Luncheon—Lita Matick, co-owner with her husband Dr. Henry Matick of the Natural Blessings Health and Nutrition store in Vincennes, will be the guest speaker at the Gibson and Pike Retired Teachers luncheon at the student union building on the campus of Oakland City University on Thursday, Sept. 12. The luncheon will begin at noon and Mrs. Matick will speak immediately after the luncheon. During a power-point presentation, she will discuss whole, organic and natural sources of vitamins and supplements and the many benefits to senior citizens. The goal of Natural Blessings is to enable and inspire individuals to take personal responsibility for their own health and well-being. Community Day of Caring—United Way of Pike County will kick-off its campaign with a Community Day of Caring on Thursday, Sept. 12. This event involves recruiting volunteers to help with projects for local not-for-profit agencies /organizations for a one day work blitz. The day's event will start with a sponsored breakfast for its volunteers. They will receive a T-shirt to wear on the job and lunch will be provided. If you would like to volunteer or are an agency that would like to submit a project, contact the United Way of Pike County office at 789-2557. This event is partially funded by Pike County Community Foundation and Golden Living Center. Blue Jeans Festival—Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Blue Jeans Community Center on Main Street. Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., pork chop dinner available. Queen contest will begin in the gym at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, a spaghetti dinner will be served. Awards program will take place at 6:30 p.m. followed by Music in the Gym Friends at 7 p.m. Movie night will begin at dark. Saturday, Sept. 14, Pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. Corn Hole Tournament to begin at 1 p.m. Participants must register by noon Sat. Sept. 14 by calling 887-2537. Euchre games will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Kids games will begin at 4 p.m. in gym. Fried chicken dinner by MC Church of God from 5-7 p.m. Hawf Family Band to perform in gym at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks display at dark. An estimated four percent of the population has a palpable thyroid nodule, and more than 50 percent have a nodule detectable by ultrasonography. FertilityCare Program—The FertilityCare program refers to a natural method to avoid or achieve pregnancy. The Creighton Model coordinates with a couple's fertility cycle without the use of drugs or contraceptives. The program teaches the couple to identify the woman's fertile and infertile days in order to achieve or avoid a pregnancy. This program is available at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Introductory and follow-up sessions are private and scheduled to meet the needs of the couple. Sessions take place in the Conference Room at Memorial Southside Office, 1100 West 12th Avenue. The cost of the introductory session is $25 per couple, and each followup session is also $25. Materials are available for the course for an additional fee of $20. The Press-Dispatch Three drivers escape injury in separate accidents during Sunday rainstorm Three drivers escaped injury in three separate accidents during the rainstorm last Sunday. At 12:23 a.m. Sunday, September 1, Keith L. Knepp, 33, of Corydon, Ky., was driving northbound on I-69 just north of the Petersburg exit, according to a report filed by Pike County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Boger. The weather that morning was rainy with high winds. The report states Knepp lost control of his Chevrolet Impala and went into a spin. The car spun twice before going off the road on the right-hand side and sliding backwards into a ditch. Knepp was not injured, and the damage to his Impala was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. Later that afternoon, at 2:56 p.m., Jon M. Hemmer, 51, of 11196 S. CR 1050 E. in Stendal, was driving east on State Road 64 near Winslow, according to a report filed by Pike County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Boger. The rain and wind were still going strong at the time. Boger's report states Hemmer hit a large tree near CR 1050 E. that had fallen into the road. Hemmer was not injured, but his Dodge pickup and horse trailer were estimated to have received $5,000 to $10,000 of damage. That night, at 8:44 p.m., the rain had stopped. Car- ol R. Horne, 77, of 8808 E. SR 356 in Otwell, was driving east on SR 56 near Winslow, according to a report filed by Pike County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Boger. The report states an ATV fell out of the bed of a pickup being driven by Shawn R. Foster, of Princeton, as he turned from CR 950 E. onto SR 56. Shortly after, Horne struck the ATV as it lay in the road. She was not injured, and the total damage caused by the accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
