He said he is in the process of getting a quote from Les Nixon do the work. Smith said it involved turning over the riprap and spraying it off to remove silt build up. He said they would also put sand in the riprap to help the filtering system. The new system was installed a few years ago and filters out much of the silt before the water ever reaches the plant. In other business, the council heard a proposal from Winslow Police to buy two door unlock systems. Town Marshal Steve English said they were using screwdrivers to get car doors unlocked and it often damaged the car doors. He said a new kit only costs about $50. Other activities at the Spurgeon Festival are a cornhole tournament, kids' games and train rides, inflatables, arts and crafts booths, clowns and a homemade quilt raffle. Most of the activities will start at about 10 a.m., including the kids' games, train rides and corn hole tourney. Corn hole tourney registration is $10. There will also be a homemade quilt raffle. Some of the proceeds of the festival will help purchase equipment for the Spurgeon Volunteer Fire Department. VFW Pork Chop benefit dinner The Petersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3587 is having a pork chop fundraiser dinner at the club house for $10, with doors open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Pork chops, baked beans, choice of potato salad or coleslaw, bread, sliced onion and pickles will be the menu. Door prizes and a gun raffle drawing are a part of the Saturday open house. Items up for grabs Saturday include a Walmart gift card and one ounce .999 percent pure silver coins. Be sure to drop by the Petersburg VFW during this Saturday's Main Street Car Fest, the Petersburg citywide yard sale and after the Kiwanis Golf Scramble. Free salsa and chips served all day. Children's Safety and Health Fair themed Weather Watcher is set for Thursday, Sept. 19 Pike County Agencies for Kids has a weather watcher themed safety and health fair for Thursday, September 19 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Winslow Community Center gym. Kids' and adult bicycle helmets will be given away by the Memorial Hospital Foundation. The Good Samaritan Hospital will be doing grip strength measurements for adults and children. The Winslow Lions Club will provide firemen hats for the children and the Deaconess Clinic will provide lightning safety and flash flood advice. A long list of activities will include an inflatable jump castle and the Winslow Lions Club kiddy train rides. Kids will be able to tour fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, and a K-9 officer and handler will also attend. An earthquake shake house will be demonstrated, as will the Pike Central Project Lead the Way emergency shelter. A meteorologist from the Paducah office of the National Weather Service will be on hand. Weather radio programing will be available. Also, there will be a smoke house where children receive instruction on how to escape a fire. They will also have a mass casualty incident trailer and the Red Cross will attend. Door prizes will be given away at 5:50 p.m. For more information, call the Extension office at 3546838. The event is jointly sponsored by the Pike County Agencies for Kids and the Winslow Lions Club. Winslow Community Fest set for Saturday, Sept. 21 The Winslow Community Fest will feature a day of activities, including a nighttime parade, log splitting contest, karaoke, flea market and street dance. This year, three organizations are co-sponsoring the event. The Winslow Lions Club is sponsoring the activities in Riverside Park, The Winslow Eagles are sponsoring the Center St. activities and the Winslow Beautification Committee will oversee the flea market. The flea market will begin at 8 a.m. on the parking lot next to the Winslow Mar- ket. Vendors can set up on Friday night. A 10x10 booth space is $7. For more information, call 789-2532.
