Greatbeerandvibesontap at Discretion D iscretionBrewingisknown for great beer and a fun, friendly atmosphere. Even its logo includes the words "wit" and "kindness" (along with wisdom and beer). The job titles of its founders and owners reflect this fun attitude. Dustin Vereker is co-founder and serves as Chief Beer Ambassador (in layman's terms he's like a general manager). Husband and wife Rob and Kathleen Genco are co-found- ers and co-owners. Rob serves as Distinguished Operations Honcho, while Kathleen is Goodness Advocate. Other founding family members are Lars Genco and Brianna Ver- eker, while Michael Demers is Discretion's Brewmaster. When Discretion Brewing opened in Soquel in 2013, it was entirely focused on serv- ing beer out of its tap room. Over the last five years Discre- tion has grown to occupy 90 percent of the building and have tremendously grown the wholesale side of the busi- ness. "We self- distribute beer across all of Santa Cruz, Mon- terey, and Santa Clara Coun- ties," says Dustin Vereker. In May, the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce rec- ognized Discretion Brewing as Business of the Year. "The award came as a great surprise to us. We had no idea we had been nominated, let alone won Business of the Year," Vereker shares. "It's a great honor to be recognized by other local business leaders for the work we do and love. We are extremely humbled and appreciative!" At Discretion, they strive to have a balanced selection of beer available at all times, usually about 12 different ones to enjoy on-site. Uncle Dave's IPA is their best seller, followed by Shimmer Pils. "We focus on making consistent, quality beer people can trust and depend on," says Vereker. "We spend a lot of time and energy on true lagers, something not a lot of smaller breweries focus on." Select bottles and cans are also available to go. In addition, Vereker says, they have a "small but burgeoning barrel-aging program that is starting to put out some very special beers." The brewery devotes a lot of effort to recognizing and sup- porting local individuals and non-profits that work hard to "better the community we all call home," as Vereker terms it. This generosity is not surpris- ing, given the word 'kindness' in its logo. "One of our favorite events that we've participated in every year since opening is The Taste of Soquel. It's a great event featuring business- es within Soquel proper and always has such a supportive and community minded vibe that aligns very closely with our core values." They have also sponsored the Mole and Mariachi Festival (put on by Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks), Grazing on the Green (for the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group), the Bonny Doon Art and Wine Festival, and the Redwood Mountain Faire, among others. Discretion has been operating a "Love Monday" benefit pro- gram for five years. On select Mondays throughout the year, it donates $1 from every pint sold to a pre-selected local nonprofit organization. During these events, the nonprofits can also set up information tables at Discretion, so that customers can learn more about an organization if they're interested. Discretion has won many awards for various beers in their relatively short tenure. These include two World Beer Cup Golds, one World Beer Cup Bronze and a Great American Beer Festival Bronze. The brewery is very fam- ily friendly, and the patio/ beer garden is dog friendly, and even pig and hedgehog friendly! The venue also boasts an excellent food menu due to its partner, The Kitchen at Discretion, owned by Santos Majano. "Chef Santos is mak- ing some of the best sea- sonal farm-table cuisine in the county," says Vereker. Sustainability is very impor- tant to Discretion. "We are committed to being good stewards of the resources we consume," says Vereker. "We brew with 100 percent organic ingredients. Though we aren't 'certified organic,' 100 percent of the raw materials we put into our beer are." They have a solar array that produces nearly half of their total electri- cal usage, and the beer garden features "all edible" plants. Vereker and the team are proud to be part of the Soquel community. "Both Soquel and Capitola have a 'can do' attitude centered on a strong sense of community," he says. "A local family, plus other com- munity members with a similar mindset, built Discretion from the ground up. None of us in the founding family had any experience in the brewing in- dustry. We simply had industri- ous spirits and a love for craft beer and the place we live. We knew we could create a thriv- ing business that could in turn give back to the place we call home." 270341stAve.SuiteA,Soquel, 831-316-0662, discretionbrewing.com Hours: Daily 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. ByTaraFatemiWalker Afewtaproomemployeesandbrewers.PhotocourtesyofDiscretion Discretion Brewing owners, Rob and Kathleen Genco.
