Five years ago, the Antelope Valley Press made the tough decision to halt printing of their weekly TV section as a cost-cutting measure. With very few regular advertisers in the section, it was hard to justify the cost of production and printing. This year, much to the relief of readers who were disappointed at the loss of the TV magazine, the Antelope Valley TV & Cable Guide returns to Palmdale. Advantage Newspaper Consultants (ANC) joined the sales staff at the Antelope Valley Press in early February for a 10-day campaign to secure annual, contracted revenue that would support the TV magazine and bring its value back to their readers. The team exceeded the sales goal of $150,000 by over 14%. ANC's Executive Director of Sales, Marie Smith, met with the newspaper's management and sales team in January to work out the campaign details and credits the newspaper's overall buy-in to the program for a big part of its success. "When I arrived at the paper for my Kickoff/Telethon I knew it was going to be a huge success. Not only did I have the publisher's buy-in, but also the sales reps. They were attentive during my kickoff and participated fully in the subsequent appointment telethon – setting over 55 appointments with qualified decision makers within 2 hours! The whole team saw this program as a win-win", says Smith. Michael McMullin, publisher of the Antelope Valley Press, saw beyond the ad revenue generated by the TV magazine campaign and is also looking forward to bringing some of their stagnant accounts back into the fold now that the TV magazine has their foot in the door. "Fred had a great rapport with our salespeople and was very good with our clients. We made at least 3 sales to very important clients that had lapsed in spending with us. I am set tomorrow to talk to one of those clients about other spending with our paper", said McMullin. "Marie and the team at Advantage Newspaper Consultants definitely delivered. From Marie's kickoff, to Fred Ellison's participation on 80 calls in two weeks, to the design team creating the book—I couldn't be happier! We have received great feedback our readers thanking us for bringing back the TV magazine after a 5-year absence. This has been a real winner for everyone!" The new 20-page Antelope Valley TV & Cable Guide launched on March 18th.
