But with an overall 56.0 score, the district as a whole remains in the "meets few expec- tations" category. MPS officials in December have been distilling school report card data from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, which assigns scores to individual schools and entire districts, based on four categories. The most recent data reflects information gleaned out of stu- dent performance in the 2016-17 school year. Superintendent Darienne Driver and other administrators discussed the report card results at School Board and c o m m i t t e e m e e t i n g s t h r o u g h o u t D e c e m b e r. Driver and other admin- i s t r a t o r s pointed out some of the d i s t r i c t ' s schools have grown at greater strides than oth- ers. "We have to learn from the schools who've shown improve- ments," Driver said. MPS, the state's largest public school district, increased its over- all score 1.4 points, from the 57.4 score in the 2015-16 school year to 58.8 this past school year, in clos- ing student achievement gaps. DPI assigns a possible 100 points to schools and districts on its report cards. Across the district, MPS also inched upward in a category known as district growth, which denotes the number of students showing improvements in stan- dardized test data. A year ago, MPS received a 60.3 score; this year's score increased a point, to 61.3.
