By HANNAH WEIKEL Conley News Service WAUKESHA — Referencing a report that found Anissa Weier may have lingering delusions, a Waukesha County judge on Dec. 21 ordered the maxi- mum commitment of 25 years of psychiatric care for Weier for her part in the so- called Slender Man stab- bing. Weier, 16, will be commit- ted to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute for treat- ment and supervision and will be not be allowed to request conditional release until July 2020. The three and a half years she has already spent in a West Bend juvenile facility will go toward her sentence, mean- ing her supervision will con- tinue until she's 37. Weier and Morgan Geyser originally faced charges of attempted first- degree intentional homicide after they stabbed classmate Payton Leutner in 2014 to please a fictional boogey- man called Slender Man. The girls' charges were less- ened to attempted second- degree intentional homicide after they accepted guilty plea deals due to mental ill- ness. Circuit Court Judge Michael Bohren followed the prosecutors' recommen- dation of a maximum com- mitment to protect the vic- tim and the community. He recognized that Weier has already spent a quarter of her life in custody, but didn't accept the defense's argu- ment that she should be released when she turns 25. "The dynamics in this case are simply tragic. What starts as a good time ends with someone almost being killed," Bohren said, reminding everyone that it had been a planned murder. He concluded that Weier could still be a danger to herself and others and should be kept in an institu- tion for the maximum sen- tence to ensure the events that played out in May 2014 aren't repeated, he said. Bohren said a predisposi- tion report he requested made a "startling" reference to a homemade Ouija board that Weier recently made at the juvenile facility where she's been held. He said she told a therapist that evil spirits had escaped from the board and she could feel them pushing down her bed at night. The report also said she still believes Slender Man exists and is a demon. "She continues to be influenced by peers and was convinced by another inmate, a devil worshipper, that Geyser is possessed," Bohren said. Weier addressed the court Thursday as a mature teenager who just reached driving age. She told Bohren she "deeply regrets every- thing" that happened that day. "I just want everyone involved in this to know that I do hold myself account- able for this and I will do everything I have to do to make sure I don't get any sort of delusion ever again," Weier said. State prosecutors had asked for the maximum sen- tence to be imposed because of the harm she and Geyser caused Leutner, who still has visible scars on her body and lives in fear, they said. "Someone will be looking over Anissa's shoulder, so (Leutner) doesn't have to think that Anissa is looking over her shoulder," said Assistant District Attorney Kevin Osborne. The victim's family wrote a letter to Bohren in which Leutner had expressed that she wanted Weier and Geyser to be com- mitted to a mental health facility after they lured her into some woods in a Waukesha park when they were all 12 years old and stabbed her 19 times. Weier's attorney, Maura McMahon, said her client cried when she was told Payton wished she and Geyser would receive men- tal health care. "It was one of the kindest things she's heard in 3 1/2 years," McMahon said. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • December 29, 2017 Pool photo Anissa Weier, 16, was sentenced to a 25-year commitment at a state mental health facility Dec. 21 for her part in a 2014 stabbing of a classmate to appease fictional internet horror character Slender Man.
