Described as a spiritual man who loved children, Tyler's death was widely covered in the media, as was the search for a suspect in the hit-and-run investiga- tion that followed. Terrence E. Harris, 35, was initially released from custody in Milwaukee when he was not charged by the District Attorney's Office. He was charged Dec. 21 — the day he was arrested in California — with hit-and- run resulting in death and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license — causing death in the Nov. 10 crash at the 5800 block of North 72nd Street. Milwaukee police initial- ly arrested him Nov. 21 while on a Coach USA bus bound for Chicago on Interstate 43. Tyler was struck by a car while he crossed the inter- section of North 72nd Street and West Carmen Avenue at a high rate of speed and failed to stop, according to video, a p o l i c e o f f i c e r said. Tyler, we a r i n g a high- visibility y e l l o w j a c k e t , flew into the air and over the roof of the car, flipping over three times before landing, according to a criminal complaint. He lay on the ground about 30 sec- onds before someone pulled up and assisted him, but it was not Harris, the com- plaint said. Surveillance video from Carmen Middle/ High School showed Harris leaving his home in his car at North 72nd Street and West Sheridan in his bur- gundy Buick LeSabre, then returning a few minutes later with the driver's side front hubcap missing and the left headlight out, which matched front-end damage from the crash. A cellphone seized at the time of Harris's initial arrest showed a number of text messages police said they believed were related to the hit-and-run crash. In a text message at 6:30 a.m. Nov. 10, four minutes after the accident, Harris told his girlfriend, Baby please pick up some serious (expletive) just happened," according to the criminal complaint. A few minutes later he described the situa- tion as "life or death," the complaint said. The phone also revealed a series of calls to auto glass repair shops, which the complaint described as similar to the damage occurred at accident scene. In an email sent at 7:01 a.m. Nov. 10, he told his place of employment he couldn't come to work because his car was "broke." A tip after Harris' car was shown led police to investigate Harris, who had an operating while intoxi- cated conviction earlier in the year while driving a 1995 Buick LeSabre. A police search of Harris' internet activity showed he searched for car covers on Nov. 15. The car was not recovered. Tyler, who died Dec. 7 from injuries suffered in the crash, was walking to his post outside Kluge Elementary School at the time of the crash. Both of his legs were amputated as a result of injuries from the crash. Tyler's family has a GoFundMe page set up for donations to help with med- ical expenses: www.gofundme.com/andy- the-crossing-guard. Suspect charged with crossing guard's death Harris Authorities await Terrence Harris' extradition
