B-8 Sports Wednesday, September 20, 2017 The Press-Dispatch into the undefended goal. "They had the ball down there for a while, we got it clear and, luckily, it came up here," Kyson Western said. "They lost me. Their goal- ie – he's a great goalie – he stuttered on his decision and I beat him to it. I passed it around him, and then it was just a wide open goal and I had to put it away." "That's a play he's done his whole career, honestly, to get behind the defense and the keeper and then find a shoot- ing window and place it," Chad Western said. "I mean, that was a goal that's a great goal for us to get, to get ev- erything going, make us feel good." "But, as we know," he add- ed, "1-0 is not a big lead." Pike Central had a chance to add to its lead about one minute later on a one-on-one breakaway by Scott, whose shot sailed across the face of the goal and missed to the right. Early in the second half, Heritage Hills almost pulled even on a free kick by junior Carson Leibering from just outside the 18 -yard box. When the ball hit off the hands of Chargers senior goalkeeper Tyler Tormohlen and landed in front of the goal, Pike Central senior Quade Claridge booted it downfield to thwart the Patriots. The Chargers would take advantage of the reprieve, as Kyson Western scored with 36:16 left in the second half to extend Pike Central's lead to 2-0. Kyson Western would score his third goal on a penalty kick with 28:16 remaining af- ter Yeager was yellow card- ed for tackling Chargers se- nior Breyton Booker in the 18 -yard box. Then, after Heritage Hills junior Gannon Staggs re- ceived a yellow card for un- sportsmanlike conduct with 26:32 left, Kyson Western netted his fourth goal of the game following a throw-in by junior Christian Benson from the sideline to the area in front of the goal. "Everybody knows he's got a great throw-in," Kyson Western said. "I mean, you give him the ball, he's going to throw it far. Every team we play says that." Pike Central would come within inches of adding to its lead when a shot by Scott – off a pass from Kyson West- ern – hit the front of the cross- bar and bounced back into the field of play with 2:15 remain- ing. Chad Western said after- ward that he felt better about his team's chances to win the game after Kyson Western's penalty kick gave the Char- gers a three-goal lead. "But there was a lot of time left," Chad Western said. "So you've still got to stay com- posed. You've got to stay level, not be too happy. I felt we did a good job of that, of staying composed, playing through it, and playing the same way that got us there. You've got to play the same way that got you to that 3-0 lead. We just kept do- ing that. And we very easily could have had another goal or two." Chad Western said that while Pike Central's offense won the game, the defense was equally as important. "Our defense really never let them do what they want- ed," he said. "Tyler (Tor- mohlen) was great in goal, and Quade Claridge saved a goal in the second half. (Se- nior) Gavin (Boyd) was all over the place, winning balls and making tackles. (Senior) Cameron (Henson), Kaleb, Quade, Gavin and Christian were so good on defense. We were so focused in everything we did." "They held up tonight and played so great,' he added. "They were always where they were supposed to be and made the right play, and if anything was not perfect they just worked their butt off right through it. That's what you want – to know that things aren't always going to be per- fect. We're just going to keep working through it, because we're an effort team. That's just the way it is." Kyson Western also had high praise for the Chargers' defense. "We knew they were just a great offensive team that's scored a lot of goals," he said. "They have everybody return- ing, so we were going to play a little more defensive. We were going to tuck the wings in. We knew they had speed and skill on the right and left wing. We knew we were going to have to score off counters and just hold up in the back." "Our defense played out- standing," he added. "They just played great. They knew we couldn't mess around back there. We'd knew they'd take it and they'd put it in the back of the net, so when they got it, they just got it out of there, and that was the game plan – just get the ball out." Chad Western called the victory over Heritage Hills a "great" team win. "Our top 14 kids, I tell them all, they're starters and they all stepped up tonight and played great, kids that maybe had not played great the last game," he said. "Everybody plays great tonight, and that's what we have to have when we play a team like that. So we're very excited." Seniors Breyton Booker and Tyler Meadors and ju- nior Hayden Kabrick add- ed one goal each as the Chargers improved to 10 - 1-1. "We were a little slow to get going in this game, but eventually got everything together and took care of business," Pike Central head coach Chad Western said. "This was our fourth shutout in a row, and I cred- it our defense for playing so well the last few games. Great efforts by Cameron Henson, Tyler Tormohlen, Quade Claridge, Kaleb Claridge, Gavin Boyd and Christian Benson have been giving us a great chance each time out to get a win." Kyson Western and sophomore Ethan Scott dished out two assists each while Booker and Quade Claridge added one apiece. "Everyone did their job, and we were able to let ev- eryone that made the trip with us Saturday get some playing time," Chad West- ern said. "It was another great team win." On Monday, Sept. 18, Pike Central dropped a 3- 1 loss at Northeast Dubois. Scott scored the Chargers' lone goal, off an assist from Henson. "They passed well and continued to show im- provement on the field," Lady Chargers head coach James DeCrane said. DeCrane said that sopho- more Jasmine Pozos – sub- bing for ailing junior Syd- ney Keith – played well on defense for Pike Central. "She did a great job on defense," DeCrane said. "She is showing some se- rious potential along with all our sophomores and ju- niors. This is a young team with a lot of talent." In a junior varsity con- test, the Lady Chargers defeated South Knox 3-1 in one half of play. On Monday, Sept. 18, Pike Central dropped a 1- 0 loss at Northeast Dubois. "Taylor had a goal in the first half, but it was called off because she was al- legedly offsides," said De- Crane, whose team fell to 4-4-1. "It was heartbreak- ing." However, DeCrane add- ed, "We came back stron- ger in the second half, pos- sessing the ball most of the half, but they managed to squeak one ball in."
