The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, September 7, 2012 10 Cooking this week Sandwich-centered series starts new season TV Media I t's not quite fall, but it sure feels like it now that kids have all gone back to school and settled into their routine. Back to school also means that lunches need to be made and packed. And while some take comfort in having the same thing in their lunch day- in and day-out, others crave a little variety -- which can put a lot of pressure on a parent if they have to think of nutri- tious options for an already picky eater. But even if your (or your loved ones') school days are long past, maybe you're in the market for some new lunch ideas to enjoy or share with family and friends. Well, that's where Jeff Mauro can help. "Food Network Star," the Chi- cago native launched his Food career last summer with his series, "Sandwich King." The show has proven to be a strong performer – even net- ting Mauro a Daytime Emmy nomination – and now it's set to kick off a new season on Food beginning Sunday, Sept. 9. So far, Mauro's presented his own twists on some pretty nice looking sammies includ- ing turkey patty melts, Monte Cristo sandwiches, lobster rolls and even sliders. Mauro explains it best with his motto that any meal can be made into a sandwich, and any sandwich can be made into a meal. As the title indicates, the series' concept is all about sandwiches. But these aren't your typical PB&J or a slice of processed cheese slapped be- tween two slices of bread. No, the sandwich has come a long way since (legend has it) the Earl of Sandwich ordered In the season premiere, Mauro visits a legendary Chi- cago eatery: Manny's Deli. Af- ter preparing some of its fa- mous corned beef sandwich- es, an inspired Mauro heads back to his kitchen where he serves up some of Manny's corned beef between two of his homemade latkes. He also prepares a brisket for a sand- wich that incorporates some red cabbage slaw and smoked mozzarella cheese, all accompanied by a carrot and raisin salad.
