The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, June 8, 2012 10 A/Otsego Manor 2 x 3 Since last week's premiere, "Best Sandwich in America" has settled into its Wednes- day night time-slot on the Travel Channel as the beloved "Man v. Food" host embarks on his latest mission: to find the top sandwich in the coun- try. Cooking this week (48) Mexican Made Easy Family favorites include tuna stuffed chiles. SATURDAY 9:00 a.m. New Travel series seeks out king of all sandwiches TV Media S Gone are the days of simply slapping some slices of deli meat between two slices of bread -- we're living in an era of roasted red pepper paninis, chicken bacon wraps, and po' boys bursting with fried shrimp. You've got your tow- ering "sammies" that are piled up so high that a kebob skewer is needed instead of a toothpick to hold it all togeth- er. Then you've got your un- usual combinations that pique the curiosity (apparent- ly, peanut butter and pickles is a combination that's not just for pregnant women). Oh, and don't forget the good ol' classics: grilled cheese, pea- nut butter and jam, ham and swiss ... they're still beloved andwich-making has been elevated to an art form of late. Yup, that's right, just one. Unimaginable, isn't it? Richman's approach to this mission – the outcome of which will probably be hotly debated – has been likened to March Madness in the official news release. He's already se- lected 30 sandwiches from 27 different cities in 10 regions within the U.S. Each episode focuses on a specific region, where Richman samples three sandwiches and selects the best one. That sandwich gets to move on to the final round of judging on the Aug. 15 finale, when it will do bat- tle against the other nine re- gional winners (plus two wild card picks) until one of them is proclaimed to be "Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America." Adam Richman hosts "Best Sandwich in America" and they're still being packed away daily in picnic baskets and lunchboxes across the country. But can you decide on which sandwich is the best one of them all? Well, let's just say we're glad Adam Richman has to make that de- cision and not us. Given that the flavour com- binations vary wildly (that's what's so fun about sand- wiches, after all), Richman has designed his own judging criteria within the series that has been dubbed the BITE scale: B for bread, I for interi- or, T for taste, E for eating ex- perience. And he'll need to be as objective as possible, given some of the iconic sandwich- es that are vying for the title, including the world-famous corned beef and pastrami sandwich from New York deli, Katz's. Still, eating your way across America is not a bad way to earn a living -- but don't make us pick just one.
