The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, May 25, 2012 10 A/Otsego Manor 2 x 3 Back-to-back episodes dominate Monday lineup TV Media F or many, Memorial Day is a time for reflection -- a day set aside to honor the soldiers who gave their lives in the service of their country. For others, the three-day weekend also offers up a taste of the upcoming summer sea- son: barbecues are fired up, movie theaters are dominated by big blockbusters, and friends and families gather to- gether -- or get away from each other by squeezing in a short vacation. For those preferring to get some quiet downtime at home, however, the TV world has its own Memorial Day tra- dition: marathons. And lots of 'em. "Restaurant: Impossible" host Robert Irvine "Storage Wars" to "NCIS" on USA Network. And it's no dif- ferent with food-themed pro- gramming, thanks to some day-long offerings from both TLC and the Food Network. For the third year in a row, Surf through those channels and you'll likely find back-to- back episodes of viewer favor- ites and movies, from A&E's "Cake Boss" dominates the TLC lineup with an all-day marathon. Back-to-back epi- sodes -- largely from last year's Season 4 -- capture all the hijinks and drama that go on at the Hoboken, N.J., bak- ery. Fans of Buddy Valastro's cakes will get to review the creative process that went into some of his more memo- rable cakes, including a work- ing toilet cake, a camping- themed cake with a fire and a milking cow cake. Viewers also get to re-live some of the more personal moments between Buddy and his "Famiglia," in- cluding the events leading up to Buddy and wife Lisa's vow renewal on-board a cruise. Over on the Food Network, "Restaurant:Impossible" dominates the daytime line-up leading into the usual Monday night block of "Diners, Drive- Ins and Dives." The one-hour series follows chef Robert Ir- vine as he tries to revive the fortunes of struggling restau- rant owners in just two days and with limited funds. The back-to-back episodes illustrate some of the various reasons a restaurant can fail, including run-down equip- ment, a disappearing clientele or direction-less management. But some of the stories also prove to be inspiring, particu- larly the transformation that took place in Canton, Ohio at the Wildcat Cafe. The student-run eatery un- derwent a physical make-over to revive interest in it, and the process also proved to be a shot in the arm to the school's culinary arts program. In addi- tion to new equipment, the students benefited from Ir- vine's teachings about run- ning a restaurant from start to finish, including how to select the freshest ingredients plus some all-important knife skills. Now, they're set to shop and chop their way to success. Cooking this week (29) Around the World In 80 Plates The chefs race in a pub crawl.
