Travelling the Tehama Trail By Richard Mazzucchi Tehama County is nestled in a boun- tiful and beautiful valley, and the Tehama Trail on Historic Highway 99 is one of the best ways to see, hear and taste all it has to offer. This article provides a road map of sorts to more fully experience what this area has to offer on the 20-mile stretch of Historic Highway 99 through Tehama County. This northernmost portion of the highway provides a tran- quil, scenic, historic and enjoyable journey through an agricultural heart- land. You may need only stop at one traffic signal at the midpoint of the route in Los Molinos — Spanish for "the mills" which once existed to grind grain for shipment via rail or Sacramento river barges — but many folks interrupt their trips to sample and purchase locally produced fruits, nuts, olives, wines and other delights. Highway 99 splits into 99E and 99W between Los Molinos and Red Bluff. The portion explored in this arti- cle is 99E. Pumpkinland is a must-stop for those with a sweet tooth. Beginning at the Frontier Village shopping center, at 650 Antelope Blvd. in Red Bluff, I'll provide approximate roadway dis- tances to various highlights as one travels south from the northern terminus of Highway 99, where it intersects with State Route 36 – the Gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
