The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, April 18, 2012 Pike Central Auto students qualify for state finals A-11 Ross D'Esposito, a senior, and Cody Lynch, a Jasper senior, will represent Pike Central High School at the state finals in the Ford/ AAA Student Auto Skills Contest (www.autoskills. com). The state finals competi- Automot ive students tice at night and on week- ends to prepare for compe- tition. The vehicle that Ross and Cody will practice on is a 2012 Ford Focus I-4 SEL furnished by Ruxer Ford in Jasper. Automotive instructor tion will be held in Indianap- olis on April 27. The two stu- dents took an Auto Service Excellence style written test in February. Their high written scores qualified them for the state hands-on competition. The competi- tion is sponsored by AAA and Ford Motor Company. Its objective is to encour- age talented young people to pursue careers as auto- motive service technicians. Only 10 schools in the state qualify for the hands- on competition to determine who will be the State Cham- pion. The State Champion receives an expense paid trip to nationals in June where they will represent Indiana. The nine other state fi- nalists are: Hoosier Hills (Bloomington) Career Center, Elkhart Area Ca- reer Center (two teams), Ben Davis High School (two teams), Northview High School in Brazil, South Ad- ams High School, South- ridge High School and Her- itage Hills High School. The students will prac- Buddy Lee and the students will spend many hours learning the complete elec- trical, fuel and computer system of the vehicle so the students will be prepared to properly diagnose a vehicle. At the state hands-on competition a Ford Focus will be "bugged" so that each team has identical mal- functions to diagnose and repair. The school that prop- erly repairs the intentional- ly bugged vehicle with the highest quality of repair re- sulting in the least amount of demerits in the shortest amount of time will bring home the first place trophy and move on to the national contest. One state champi- on from each state is eligi- ble for nationals. Lee and the student's goal are to have a perfect- ly repaired vehicle with ze- ro demerits. "If the stu- dents put forth the effort they should accomplish this goal. They are very talent- ed," said instructor Buddy Lee. "It has been a real plea- sure to work with this year's seniors. Ross and Cody will do well at the state finals and in a career." Fish For News? Not a Chance! You Are Approved! 6 Years Sales THANK YOU TO ALL SUPPORTERS OF THE PETERSBURG STELLAR COMMUNITY PROJECT Words cannot express the gratitude that I have for our community, City Employees our county, and our region for coming together to support the Stellar Community Grant Application for the City of Petersburg. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for our community as we have a 1/3.5 chance at $20 Million dollars in outside investment that would forever change our community. Whether you were one of the professionals, engineers, or architects who supplied technical drawings, or simply a member of our community who swept a street, wrote a letter, or painted a curb; you have been a valuable part of our Stellar Team! I will never forget your work, dedication, and positive thinking which truly made our application the best it could possibly have been. I would also like to thank my wife Cassi for putting up with my very hectic schedule, long work days, and sleepless nights. Another special thank you goes to my children, Reid, Colin, Reagan, and Callie for missed ballgames, board games, movie nights, and those other special times that a dad shouldn't miss. I have made every attempt to thank each and every one that has been involved in this process. If I have missed someone I apologize now and thank you also for your efforts. The selection committee will continue to visit the other 6 communities and will finish that process on April 27. Based on that timeline, we are expecting to know the selected winners around the middle of May. In the meantime, and always thereaſter, please keep our community, its leaders, and its future in your thoughts and prayers. Regardless of whether decision makers in Indianapolis designate us as such, Petersburg is, and always will be a Stellar Community! God Bless each and every one of you!
