The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, March 16, 2012 10 A/Otsego Manor 2 x 3 Programming block helps charity bake sales TV Media W hen we hear about hunger, we don't al- ways think about it being present in our own communities. Our grocery store shelves are brimming with food op- tions, and shows such as "Ex- treme Couponing" perpetu- ate the idea of abundance. But the sad reality is that, ac- cording to a 2011 USDA re- port, more than 16 million children right here in the United States aren't getting the nutritious meals they need on a regular basis. And rising food and fuel costs are doing little to end that trend. As much as the Food Net- work can feature some deca- dent-looking stuff sometimes, it's also mindful that food is not just a hobby or a passion -- it's a necessity for us all. In "Semi-Homemade With Sandra Lee" is one of the programs that are part of Food's "Share Our Strength Bake Sale" cooking block keeping with that awareness, it has partnered with Share Our Strength (strength.org), a non-profit organization com- mitted to putting an end to childhood hunger. On Sunday, March 18, the Food Network is dedicating its morning block in support of that partnership. Food's "Share Our Strength Bake Sale" cooking block in- cludes episodes aimed at in- spiring bakers across the country who may be partici- pating in Share Our Strength's fundraising campaign known as the Great American Bake Sale (gabs.strength.org). This includes an episode of "Mexican Made Easy," in which Marcela Valladolid pre- pares Mexican desserts and pastries that are perfect for sharing including tres leches cake and chocolate-filled cin- namon-dusted churros. Two episodes of "Giada at Home" also offer up some delectable bake sale-ready goodies in- cluding s'more brownie bites, lemon carnival cookies and sweet peach cake. Food star Sandra Lee knows first-hand how tough it can be to grow up with lim- ited access to nutritious meals, and has worked close- ly with Share Our Strength in the past. The March 18 epi- sode of "Semi-Homemade" features Lee's own bake sale- friendly recipes, including per- sonal pizza squares, choco- late caramel brownies, mini strawberry sugar cookie sandwiches and a mini cup- cake buffet. She also shares tips on how to wrap and pres- ent the treats to create more visual interest. But Share Our Strength is not just about getting food on the table – it's also about making healthy foods more accessible and helping kids learn how to make nutrition- ally-wise choices for them- selves. Thus, the Food Net- work programming blocks also features themed epi- sodes of "Hungry Girl," "30 Minute Meals," "Ten Dollar Dinners" that will do just that -- present healthier meal ideas to win over kids and grown-ups alike.
