Page 4 October 8, 2015 Annual networking P ublishers, newspaper executives and advertis- ing personnel gathered for HSPA's Annual Conference Sept. 17-18 at The Alexander Hotel in Indianapolis. The event included nationally recognized trainers, a golf outing, advertising awards gala and other learning and networking opportunities. During the awards luncheon, HSPA awarded its Distinguished Service Award to Mike Fender, a former Indianapolis Star director of photography. Receiving Frank O'Bannon Sunshine Awards were Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance and Gail Pebworth of the League of Women Voters of Indiana. Top prize in the HSPA Foundation golf outing went to the foursome from The Corydon Democrat. The outing's coveted Freedom Cannon was award- ed to Team South for the fourth consecutive year in the North vs. South Golf Challenge. Jon O'Bannon, right, publisher of The Corydon Democrat and son of the late governor who supported open government, presented the award. Bob Heisse, left, of The Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster), nominated Mance. Mike Fender, right, received HSPA's 2015 Distinguished Service Award during the Annual Conference luncheon. Steve Key, left, HSPA executive director and general counsel, presented the award to Fender, a former director of photography for The Indianapolis Star.
