Page 2 October 8, 2015 Former newspaper owner spent 50 years in industry Community volunteer active with KPC Media business A nn Allen, 80, who spent more than five decades in the newspaper busi- ness, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, of natu- ral causes in her Akron, Indiana, home. For 26 years she wrote the Fleeting Moments weekly column in The Rochester Sentinel. She also kept Sentinel readers aware of Akron news. She began her writing career in 1962 when she and her former husband Loren Sheetz purchased the Akron News. They purchased the Mentone News in 1964, merged the two into the Akron Mentone News and eventually sold that publication in 1977. She was honored with the Indiana Historical Society's Jacob Platt Dunn Jr. Award in 2008 for an article that was published in Traces of Indiana magazine. She and her late husband Bob Allen were named Akron 4th of July parade grand mar- shals in 2000. Allen was writing a book about the town's history. She has already written four others, two based on her early columns in The Akron Mentone News, one about the history of Pike Lumber Co. and another about the history of Akron United Methodist Church. Ann was a freelance writer, and The Sentinel wasn't her only gig. She frequently con- tributed to Farm World News, edited by former Sentinel writer Dave Blower. Her writing also was pub- lished in such publications as Guideposts, Grit, Today's Christian Woman and others. Over the past couple years Allen also shared her talent for writing with the greater community, teaching skills to the Akron Area Writers Group. Her awards included the highest honor given by the Women's Press Club of Indiana in 2011, the Communicator of Achieve ment. She was a longtime member of the club. In 2011 she also was named the Honeycomb Award winner for the most points garnered in the club's annual writing contest. She was 2004 president of that club and in 2011 was given the President's Award for researching and writing the club history in anticipa- tion of its centennial. In addition to her women's press club awards, she also was honored by the Hoosier State Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Federation of Press Women. She enjoyed traveling and sometimes took her pen and notebook. She was once kicked off a collective farm in Belarus and was the only American at a press confer- ence with the Grand Duke of Luxenbourg and the visiting Prime Minister of Denmark in a castle at Luxembourg. Allen graduated from Akron High School in 1952 and stud- ied at Manchester College and Indiana University. The daughter of Margaret and Leon Kindig, she grew up on a farm south of Akron. Allen has two sons, four step- children and many grandchil- dren and great-grandchildren. – The Rochester Sentinel D orothy Lee Booth Witwer died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at Key West Health and Rehabilitation in Florida. Following a childhood in Philadelphia; London, England; Coral Gables, Florida; and Puerto Rico, she attended Abbot (now Andover) Academy and Smith College, both in Massachusetts. In Florida, before departing for Abbot, she won a state- wide history award. On Oct. 12, 1951, she mar- ried George Osburn Witwer of South Bend, Indiana.
