By ARTHUR THOMAS Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — The trend is still not heading in the right direction for Gov. Scott Walker's presidential cam- paign. He's fallen to sixth in the RealClearPolitics polling average and he garnered just 3 percent support in a recent Monmouth national poll. His national average has- n't been this low since November of last year and his average hasn't moved up since July 31. A Politico headline declared him "the biggest loser of the sum- mer." The story (http://politi. co/1L9UKy8) quoted an Iowa Republican as saying, "He can't seem to find his way on any given issue with a hand- held GPS. He's been on all three sides of every two-sided issue." Walker's cam- paign hasn't let the slide happen without pushing back. He rode a m o t o r c y c l e throughout New Hampshire Labor Day weekend, he made the rounds on cable televi- sion and in opinion pieces arguing for the need to pro- tect law enforcement, the pro-Walker PAC announced a major ad buy and he tried to push back at those saying he wanted to build a wall on the border with Canada. "This is just a joke in terms of how people react to things," Walker said on "America's Newsroom" on Fox News (http://bit.ly/ 1EG4GCO). "People should go back and actually watch what I said on Sunday (Aug. 30). I didn't say that at all. I said it's a legitimate issue to look to make sure there's enough staff working with those local law enforce- ment officials. I've never talked about a wall with the North." Walker received a lot of criticism in the press and on social media after comments he made on NBC's "Meet the Press" were interpreted to mean he was interested in building a wall to secure the border with Canada. The Canadian wall issue also spilled over into Walker's battle with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush over the Iran nuclear deal. Walker released a Web video Aug. 31 criticizing Bush for not being more opposed to the deal. Walker has repeatedly said he would end the deal on the first day of his presidency. The Washington Post reported (http://wapo.st/ 1UsoAYU) Mike Murphy, a longtime Bush strategist who is leading a super PAC supporting his campaign tweeted: "Jeb strongly opposes Iran deal. Walker distracted; focused on his plan to build wall with... Canada. #NotReady." The tweet set off a back-and- forth with Rick Wiley, Walker's campaign manag- er. ".@murphymike problem is @JebBush shouldn't need to consult with a committee before ripping up this horri- ble deal," Wiley tweeted. "@rick_wiley You guys seem to need a committee; to figure out where to stand on Life, Immigration, 14th amendment, and who cam- paign mgr is," Murphy responded.
