Just what was it that gave Ein- stein his insights into the reality of our universe? Who wouldn't want to root around in Edison's mind and pull out a few brilliant ideas? Well, if you have any interest at all in fine foods and delicious meals and haven't been watching PBS's "The Mind of a Chef," then you've been missing out on the op- portunity to do just that with some of America's greatest culinary minds. The fourth season of the Emmy- winning show premiered last week and is currently airing Saturday evenings on the public broadcast- er. Just like in seasons past, two of the country's most recognized chefs will have their brains picked clean, as we're gradually taken on a journey through their inspira- tions, their loves and their lives to find out just where their culinary creativity comes from. This season is bringing forward a pair of chefs from opposite ends of the country. From the east comes Chef Gabrielle Hamilton, the chef and owner of Prune res- taurant in New York City, a pub- lished author and the winner of three James Beard Awards. From the west comes Chef Da- vid Kinch, the chef and proprietor of California's famous Manresa, a restaurant that has earned two Mi- chelin stars for six years running. Beyond that amazing distinction, his restaurant has been named one of the 50 best in the world by "Res- taurant Magazine." So, clearly, there's something going on in these chefs' brains that has taken them to the very top of their profession. As in seasons past, Anthony Bourdain narrates each episode (he also serves as ex- ecutive producer) as the cameras take us to locations around the world that have guided the culi- nary journeys of the pair of sub- jects, explore the ingredients that really drive them to excel and talk to the people who've influenced and inspired them. After three seasons, a few Em- mys and a pair of James Beard Awards, "The Mind of a Chef" is still going strong. The fourth sea- son continues Saturdays on PBS (check local listings).
