5 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, August 14, 2015 By Andrew Warren TV Media Go for four: In Hollywood, if something works, milk it. "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!" is barely behind us, and already Syfy is laying out its plans for a fourth installment of the over- the-top shark-based disaster movie franchise. At the end of the third film, which premiered July 22 on the NBCUniversal-owned channel, the fate of Tara Reid's ("Ameri- can Pie," 1999) character April — who's been in all three films to date — is very much up in the air. The movie ends — spoiler alert! — just as a piece of debris from space hurtles to- wards her, setting up a cliff- hanger ending that will keep franchise fans in suspense until "Sharknado 4" arrives. In a metaphorical love letter to the "Sharknado" communi- ty that's made the franchise such a success, though, the masterminds be- hind the films are leaving it up to the fans to decide April's fate Fans have been encouraged to vote at Sharknado.syfy.com or use the Twitter hashtags #AprilLives or #AprilDies, with the more popular fate for Reid's character becoming the cannon storyline. It may be unconventional for a franchise to give up cre- ative control over one of its two main stars (the other be- ing "Beverly Hills, 90210's" Ian Ziering), but for the "Sharkna- do" franchise, turning to Twit- ter makes perfect sense. In 2013, "Sharknado" premiered to underwhelming ratings, but the resulting explosion of tweets, including many by ce- lebrities, resulted in repeat air- ings of the movie, which helped grow its audience by leaps and bounds. "Sharknado 4" has no re- lease date yet, but if the past films are any indication, fans should expect to see it in the summer of 2016.
