It's a good thing, then, that there's not a hair out of place in the TBS sitcom "Clipped," which has been entertaining audienc- es since mid-June. Season 1 of "Clipped" comes to a close Tuesday, Aug. 18, on TBS. Originally titled "Buzzy's," "Clipped" is set in the old Bos- ton neighborhood of Charles- town at a barbershop that sees former high school classmates from different cliques working together. The series hails from writers David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, the power duo be- hind the 16-time Emmy-win- ning sitcom "Will & Grace," and is commanded by long- time "Two and a Half Men" di- rector James Widdoes. It's clear to see that there's quite a bit of star power behind the scenes, but there is just as much — if not more — on screen, too. Leading the charge is a woman who has accomplished quite a bit in her 30 years on the planet. Ashley Tisdale made a name for herself in Hollywood as a Disney darling, but she got her start very early — at the tender age of three. She appeared in more than 100 TV commercials as a young'un, before moving on to theater productions such as "Les Misérables" and "Annie." After a move to Los Angeles, Tisdale saw her star begin to rise. She was cast for a main role in the hit Disney Channel series "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" before vaulting to na- tional attention in the two- time Emmy-winning TV movie "High School Musical" (2006) as main antagonist Sharpay Evans. She went on to lend her voice to Disney Channel's three-time Emmy-winning ani- mated series "Phineas and Ferb," and currently stars as the titular character in the Dis- covery Family animated series "Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch." Recently, Tisdale has started taking on more adult roles, in- cluding stints in "Hellcats," "Sons of Anarchy" and "Super Fun Night," culminating in her role as aspiring singer Danni in "Clipped." "[The show is] definitely edgier; we're allowed to say bad words," she joked in an in- terview with "Access Holly- wood." "It's so different for me, coming from where I come from. It's definitely more ma- ture, the content. Even the sit- com aspect of it, the comedy is a little bit different. I'm used to being 'on' the joke, where this is more natural [and] it has the emotional depth to it." Also starring in "Clipped" is a man who is no stranger to Beantown. Emmy-nominated actor George Wendt, most well known for his time in "Cheers" as Norm, stars as the man the hair salon is named after, Buzzy. Wendt and his experi- ence are definitely a catch for "Clipped," something Tisdale addressed in the "Access Holly- wood" interview. "He's one of the nicest guys ever," she said. "He's pretty much the poppa bear on set, hanging out with us kids. You learn so much from him. Every- thing he does is just impecca- ble." Rounding out the rest of the ensemble cast is a host of up-and-coming actors and ac- tresses. Leading the charge is Lauren Lapkus, who stars as the religious receptionist Joy. The improv actress got her break in the short-lived NBC series "Are You There, Chel- sea?" and has since gone on to have a recurring role as CO Fis- cher in Netflix's "Orange is the New Black." She's seen some success on the silver screen as well, with a role in the Chris Pratt-starring box office smash hit "Jurassic World" (2015). Mike Castle ("Family Trap," 2012) stars opposite Tisdale as A.J. Salerno, an aspiring base- ball player who proves to be the object of Danni's affec- tions. Former loser-turned- owner of the barbershop Ben, played by Ryan Pinkston ("Tower Prep"), is now the boss of many of his old class- mates, who include his best friend Mo (Matt Cook, "True Blood") and the abrasive Char- maine (Diona Reasonover, "TMI Hollywood"). One of the perks of having a supporting cast with new tal- ent is that a lot of learning goes on while on set. For Tis- dale, who continues to pursue more grown-up options away from Disney, ongoing learning is a fulfilling task. "For me as an actress, the fact that I'm learning every sin- gle week something new [is] just so fulfilling. I've done sit- coms in the past, but I feel like I'm really challenged with the great cast, because they're all improv actors, so we kind of just learn from each other."
