Oneonta Daily Star, NY: Food Feb 4, 2012 to Feb 10, 2012 Popular series lives on in re-runs and new special TV Media E ven if you haven't watched "Good Eats," chances are you've seen Alton Brown on TV. The beloved, bespectacled host of several Food Network shows and specials may have retired his ever-popular series last year, but he is by no means kicking back and tak- ing it easy. Brown can usually be seen Sunday nights on the Food Network as host of "Iron Chef America" (it's pre-empted by "Cupcake Wars" this week but a new episode is sched- uled for Feb. 19). Last October, he also returned to host the fourth installment of "The Next Iron Chef" – which crowned Geoffrey Zakarian as the winner and successor to former Iron Chef Cat Cora. You might have even seen him in ads for Welch's grape juice. But it was indeed "Good Eats" that earned him acco- lades and the respect of peers and fans alike. The show con- tinues to draw viewers as it airs weekday mornings on the Food Network. And while "Good Eats" fans have had to content themselves with that since last May, he did wrap up the series' production with three themed specials – the last of which airs Friday, Feb. 10. Titled "Turn Up the Dark," it focuses on the qualities of dark chocolate – which is fit- ting, since Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Over the course of its 13- year, 249-episode run, Brown acted as the series' show-run- ner, writer, co-producer (with his wife, DeAnna) and star. Through the use of humour and science – Brown himself likened it to a combination of Julia Child, Monty Python and Mr. Wizard – he offered up his perfected version of classic recipes while deconstructing the process along the way. It's an approach that won him a Peabody Award and last year's James Beard Award for Best TV Food Personality (and many positive reviews from at-home chefs too, judging by his recipe for roast turkey found online at foodnetwork. com). He's never referred to him- self as a chef, either. He was a filmmaker first, serving as cin- Alton Brown in "Good Eats" ematographer on various projects including the music video for R.E.M.'s "The One I Love." Hooked on cooking shows in-between shoots but bored with what was out there, Brown opted for a ca- reer change and trained at the New England Culinary In- stitute in Vermont. He then set out to change the TV land- scape (at least food-wise, anyway). Since then, Brown has penned a number of award- winning, best-selling cook- books (including his latest, "Good Eats 3: The Later Years" which hit stores in Oc- tober) and contributed on other projects including his mini-series "Feasting on As- phalt."
