(74) Food Wars 12:30 p.m. (74) Food Wars Oneonta Daily Star, NY: Food Jan 21, 2012 to Jan 27, 2012 Travel's Andrew Zimmern tours America in new season TV Media S ometimes, you can travel around the world only to find that the most unique treasures are right here in your own backyard. And as it turns out, that's exactly what TV personality Andrew Zimmern has discov- ered. For the unacquainted, Zim- mern is the award-winning host of the Travel Channel se- ries "Bizarre Foods," which follows the witty host as he travels the globe to document some of the most unique cui- sine on Earth. Over the course of the show's six seasons, Zimmern (and his seemingly cast-iron stomach) has sam- pled everything from reindeer milk to scorpions on toast - and has accumulated quite the accolades in the process (not to mention a prestigious James Beard Award for his hosting duties). Now admittedly, part of the fun might be the fact that some dishes just sound gross to the unaccustomed when it's made with an ingredient that you would never have considered before. (A still- beating frog heart, anyone?). And while it's not really about the shock value, it's not al- ways for the faint of heart ei- ther (vegans, consider your- selves warned). Now, Zimmern is racking up a few less frequent flyer miles than before by sticking closer to home in "Bizarre Foods America," premiering Monday, Jan. 23 on Travel. This time, the entire season will be devoted exclusively to America's own hidden cui- sine. From unique recipes passed down through gener- ations to some of the most unlikely foods you'd ever think to find, Zimmern is out to find it all. The usual format for each episode finds Zimmern on lo- cation to present the area's traditions, explain how the "bizarre" food in question is prepared, and then samples it in front of the camera. In the premiere episode, Zimmern heads to Minnesota's Twin Cities to explore that area's intriguingly unique dining op- tions. First, he heads outdoors to learn how to capture a snapping turtle before sam- pling it deep fried. After trying "Bizarre Foods" host Andrew Zimmern during a stop in St. Paul, Minn. out bow fishing and sampling some other local fare, Zim- mern is then introduced to a product known as "meat glue." It may seem like the stuff of sci-fi but some may al- ready be familiar with its use in molecular cuisine (not to mention it's long been used to make such food products as imitation crab meat). Other stops will include Austin, Boston, Detroit, Mi- ami, Seattle and many more. And through it all, the mes- sage that resonates is that the great melting pot that is America has resulted in just as many unusual food tradi- tions as the rest of the world. You just might not have oth- erwise heard about it - until now. Don't give your ad the wrong kind of shelf life.
